VoxCell Bioinnovation is looking for our next Lead Mechatronics Engineer.
We are a biotechnology start-up company located in Victoria, BC. We are developing human-like cancer tissue models for reliable pre-clinical testing. Our tissue models are developed using our high-resolution 3D bioprinter (Canada’s first high-resolution bioprinter) and proprietary bioinks. Reporting to the CEO, the Lead Mechatronics Engineer will be responsible for managing the hardware department, in addition to designing, building, and testing advanced automation solutions to support VoxCell’s mission of producing human-like perfusable tissue models. The Lead Mechatronics Engineer will lead a team of mechanical engineers while collaborating with our scientific staff. This role will be 50% team lead and administrative responsibilities and 50% hands-on technical work.

The successful candidate will have several years of experience delivering bespoke automated equipment in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment. The role requires a deep understanding of electronics, electromechanics, and mechanical design along with strong communication skills, creativity, initiative, and a sense of urgency.
This is a full-time and in-office position in our Victoria, BC office.
Compensation
* $80,000 - 100,000 annual salary, plus equity

Key Responsibilities
* Lead a team of mechanical engineers, and co-op students by: assigning and evaluating their work, hosting regular 1:1 meetings, and conveying information about technical work to the CEO
* Design, build, test, and maintain automated equipment
* Contribute to the continued development of VoxCell’s High-Resolution Bioprinter
* Work closely with other departments, ensuring that engineering work is aligned with go-to-market strategy and scientific needs
* Support the CEO & Sales Team in business development efforts, including presenting work to a global group of clients & potential customers, partners, and investors
* Lead vendor and contractor relationships as related to tools and lab space
* Prepare technical documentation and user training resources for a variety of audiences
* Engage with internal and external to establish project requirements & milestones, and take ownership of the Engineering department’s contributions
We are Looking For
* Experience designing system architecture based on project requirements and stakeholder feedback
* Ability to design, test, and troubleshoot electronic and electromechanical systems using common tools and techniques
* Experience leading a diverse team
* A high degree of self-motivation and professionalism.

Qualifications
* Degree in Mechatronics or Electrical Engineering
* Minimum of 3 years of experience in mechatronics design or automation role
* Product engineering experience including, gathering user requirements and specifications, prototyping, iterative design, and stakeholder management
* Knowledge of and experience with electronics and electromechanical design
* Experience with ECAD packages, preferably KiCAD
* Comfortable using hand and power tools, such as soldering irons and oscilloscopes
* Experience with prototyping electrical systems on perforated boards or similar platforms, including familiarity with microcontrollers such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi; PCB design experience is a plus.
* Experience with schematic design
