Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist
Part time 30 hours per week (0.8wte) ten month fixed term contract
The Royal Surrey County Hospital is looking for a Band 7 Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist to join the therapy team on the in-patient wards at Milford Hospital for a fixed term contract. We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Occupational Therapist to provide highly specialist support to the Occupational Therapy team within this sub-acute setting.
You will be joining a dynamic, experienced and friendly team that includes physiotherapists, nurses, doctors, and support workers. We provide rehabilitation to sub-acute ortho-geriatric and frailty patients.
Main duties of the job
In this role, you will be expected to perform to a high clinical standard and support a team of band 6 and 5 Occupational Therapists and assistants, as well as Occupational Therapy students on placement, while leading our service development. You will work closely with the Physiotherapy team lead and both the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy clinical specialists in the setting.
There will be opportunities to work closely with our local community services as the Trust welcomed these services, alongside Pro-Care, in April 2018.
Our services cover 7 days per week, and the post holder may be expected to work regular weekends and bank holidays. Use of own car for business use is essential.
We have a strong commitment to clinical supervision and Continuing Professional Development; you will be regularly supervised by a senior therapist and attend the band 6 Occupational Therapy support groups. You will be supported to engage in service development and encouraged to put forward suggestions as to how we can enhance and grow the services we offer. We have a well-structured In-Service Training Programme which the successful applicant will be able to learn from, as well as the opportunity to lead sessions with support from your team.

Job responsibilities
* Leads and manages the Milford Community Hospital Unit Occupational Therapy team.
* Uses highly specialist evidence-based Occupational Therapy knowledge and skills to manage a complex caseload of patients who present with co-morbidities, with regard to the physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and psychosocial aspects of their care.
* The post holder will act as an autonomous practitioner and as a source of expertise in the assessment, treatment, and management of this patient group; providing advice to patients, carers, other health and social care professionals, consultants, GPs, and fellow therapists.
* The post holder will incorporate national guidance e.g. NICE and NSF, and the use of evidence-based research into their practice and that of the service.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy by a recognised awarding body Royal College of Occupational Therapists.
* Educated to master's level/degree level/NVQ/Certificate OR equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level/supervisor/in specialist area.
* Satisfies the criteria for full Membership of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
* Must be a State Registered Occupational Therapist.
* Further qualifications/Study.
* Member of the appropriate special interest group.
Knowledge and Skills
* Ability to take responsibility for own caseload which will be composed mainly of patients who require highly skilled specialist OT/PT intervention including hoist, bed, and pressure care provision.
* Ability to liaise with other agencies, statutory public service, or independent.
* Ability to provide clinical supervision and professional support to junior occupational therapy staff and students, giving guidance and training when needed to maintain professional standards and good working practice.
* Ability to communicate effectively with sensitive information, orally and in writing in a wide variety of situations.
* Ability to establish positive relationships with patients, colleagues, and other departments and agencies to contribute to the work of the occupational therapy department.
* Ability to use own time effectively and to assist and support junior occupational therapy staff with the effective management of their own time.
* Ability to evaluate interventions used and to research new/alternative methods.
