Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Dispensary
· Stock control management including putting stock away received from stores, rotating stock/checking expiries where relevant and performing stock control counts.
· Ensure dispensary areas are kept clean and tidy and shelves/other relevant areas are cleaned according to schedule.
· Filing prescriptions and other paperwork and ensuring dispensary areas are sufficiently stocked with all sundries (leaflets, cards, bottles, bags).
· Undertake basic labelling and dispensing duties according to procedure and relevant NVQ accreditation.
· Perform prompt and accurate reception duties according to procedure and good customer care in all dispensary areas for patients and all staff.
· Sort, count, compile and, where relevant, dispose of unsuitable medication returns.
· Receive open and empty ward bags and put contents into relevant areas. Place ward bags in appropriate shelf locations at relevant collection times. This includes bags for delivery to internal and external units.
· Carry out daily monitoring of fridge and dispensary temperatures using sensilla.
· Maintain dispensed outpatient prescriptions awaiting collection and return medicines to stock where necessary.
· Perform all necessary logging in of in/out patient and discharge prescriptions and record logging out times for relevant parts of the dispensing process, using the prescription tracker system (PTS).
· Assist in ensuring dispensary workload is managed in order or according to priority.
· Hand out and dispense prescriptions where necessary according to procedure.
· Assist in collection and reconciliation of prescription charges.
· Answer telephone promptly and courteously, referring relevant calls efficiently where necessary.
· To be competent in both In and outpatient dispensary’s.
Stores/Distribution
· Print off or fill stock requisitions for dispensary.
· Participate in the topping up of stock drugs to wards and other clinical areas against a predefined stock list.
· Issue stock items to wards/clinical areas via the pharmacy computer system.
· Empty returned ward boxes and return stock (via the pharmacy computer system) or dispose of unsuitable pharmaceuticals where relevant and according to procedure.
· Ensure all pharmaceutical products are stored securely and meet safe custody requirements.
Unpacking orders and putting goods away under the correct storage conditions.
· File all records appropriately and according to procedure.
· Remain validated to work in distribution.
Other Duties
· Participation in weekend/Bank Holiday or other rotas in accordance with the needs of the service.
· Participation in annual appraisal/PDP and performance review initiatives of the Trust.
· Undertake all statutory and mandatory training and relevant updates in accordance with Trust requirements.
· Satisfactory completion of all necessary validation and NVQ 2 requirements relevant to the post.
· Participation in other training initiatives to meet individual and departmental requirements relevant to the post and the pharmacy service.
· Complies with all other departmental and Trust policies.
· Undertakes any other duties required by the section/team leaders, principal pharmacists or the Chief Pharmacist.
Person specification
Education and Qualifications
* Numeracy (including basic calculations) and fluency in reading and writing English language.
* NVQ 2 in pharmacy services/equivalent or willing to work toward.
* GCSE English and mathematics or equivalent.
