Job Description
Leonardo UK Ltd., a leading defence technology company, is recruiting to support the development of sensors for integration on future airborne platforms. Leonardo’s long heritage in sensor development spans technologies such as Radar, Electronic Warfare, Electro Optic & Infrared sensing and Communications that are supplied to both Defence and Commercial customers worldwide.
Leonardo is working with other industry partners as well RAF’s Rapid Capabilities Office and the UK Ministry of Defence to develop the technologies needed for the next generation of combat air vehicles. As part of this (and other programmes), Leonardo is looking to recruit experienced and enthusiastic new Engineers & Scientists to meet the challenges ahead and we have opportunities at our Bristol and Luton sites.
A new opportunity has arisen for a Lead Antenna Engineer to lead a team of Antenna Engineers working in a Core Delivery Team (CDT) across a common RF product portfolio. This opportunity would appeal to someone at Lead Engineer level, or approaching, looking to advance their leadership skills with a view to future progression to Chief Engineer, Technical Specialist or Project Engineering Management.
This is a technical leadership role. The Lead Antenna Engineer will report to the Chief Antenna Engineer.
Due to the nature of this role, in order to obtain full SC security clearance (with access to UK Eyes Only and ITAR export controlled material), any candidate being considered must be a sole UK National.
Key Responsibility Areas
As part of a growing UK wide team, and depending on your skills and expertise, work may include:
The development of existing product and advanced research into cutting-edge solutions for both new and existing platforms.
Using various EM simulation codes (e.g. CST Microwave Studio and FEKO) to analyse and optimise the design and installation impacts of sensors on a platform.
Undertake the detailed design and development of antenna/radome (sensor/window) and any frequency selective component, together with their associated electrical, mechanical and functional interfaces.
Technical assessment and modelling of system or subsystem design to ensure compatibility with overall system performance. This extends to acting as independent Design Assessor to support the Electronics Function as required.
In conjunction with the Chief Antenna Engineer, setting the technical strategy for the discipline and assuring that the people, process and tool capabilities and in place for their local team to achieve their objectives.
Generation of discipline estimations and project plans for project delivery as directed by the Chief Antenna Engineer.
Responsible for the day-to-day line management of direct reports within their immediate area, raising any wider issues to the Chief Antenna Engineer and Electronics People and Capability Lead.
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required
Degree in a STEM subject (Physics, Mathematics, Electronic/Electrical Engineering, System Engineering, or other science-based subject).
Experience / Education in at least one of the following areas of Electromagnetics: Radio frequency (RF) design, Antenna design/modelling/measurement (including installed antenna design) or Computational Electromagnetic Modelling (CEM)
Excellent numerical problem solving skills and an aptitude for lateral or innovative thinking
The ability to assimilate complicated topics quickly and possess strong communication skills to convey complex subjects across a multi-disciplined project team.
Demonstrated experience of technical leadership and delivery of complicated engineering work packages.
Desirable Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge
Degree in Physics, a mathematical, engineering or suitable science-based subject. A Master’s Degree or PhD in a subject such as Physics, Antenna Design, Propagation, Electromagnetics, Microwave engineering, Data Analysis of measured data, etc.
Working knowledge of EM modelling tools such CST Microwave Studio or similar.
Scientific programming experience. MATLAB is a preferred tool but knowledge of other languages is acceptable if it suggests an easy adaptation to MATLAB.
A theoretical or practical knowledge of antenna measurements.
Measurement experience using standard microwave equipment (VNA, Spectrum Analyser, etc.).
Experience of direct line management of engineers including conducting appraisals and managing personal development of team members.
