Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity to recruit a Senior Biomedical Scientist in Haematology to join our team at UHBW for a fixed term 12-month post! The successful applicant will be posted at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.
This will be joining the Senior Haematology team, overseeing and helping manage all aspects of Haematology work and the greater team. Main responsibilities include:
* Routine Haematology and morphology oversight
* Haemoglobinopathy management
* Quality management
UHBW laboratories teach Haematologists, Clinical and Biomedical Scientists, Medical Laboratory Assistants, Visiting students, and other staff.
The successful applicant will have HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist and ideally a Master's degree in a relevant science subject or equivalent.
This is an opportunity to join our friendly laboratory that provides excellent training and further studying opportunities for the right candidate.
The working pattern in this role is rota-based. Therefore, your contracted hours of 37.5 per week (full-time working equivalent) will be calculated across a rota period of 13 weeks in accordance with agenda for change. Depending on the needs of the service, your total working hours will fluctuate due to the different lengths of time of the shifts; however, as part of rota management, your shifts will balance to be within your contracted time.
Main duties of the job
* Manage a team of Biomedical Scientists and support workers for the Haematology section
* Develop a culture in which staff are empowered and encouraged to continuously improve the delivery of a high-quality service
* Ensure the development of realistic objectives for staff, through leadership, motivation, and performance review
* Provide a high-quality diagnostic service through scientific and technical activities commensurate with the training and education of a Biomedical Scientist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
* Experience of compliance with standards as required within work duties such as UKAS standard ISO15189
* There may be a requirement to work OOH's if necessary

Essential
* BSc in Biomedical Sciences
* HCPC State Registration
* Evidence of CPD
Desirable
* Management/Leadership Training
* MSc or equivalent in another pathology subject
Knowledge and experience
Essential
* Knowledge and experience of Quality System standards and regulations (UKAS)
* In-depth knowledge and expertise in Haematology
* Significant experience of Morphology and Haemoglobinopathies
* Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and practice applicable to laboratories
* Knowledge of IT as applied to all aspects of Haematology
Desirable
* Significant experience in using Quality Management Systems
* Experience of staff management (e.g., training, supervision, organisational and appraisal)

* Knowledge and skills in the operation of Pathology LIMS
* Good interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
* Good organisational skills
* High-level understanding of practical and theoretical Haematology in pathology services

* Ability to oversee the use of routine and specialist laboratory equipment
