We are looking to recruit 2 Clinical Assistants.
The Clinical Assistants work alongside Junior Doctors to support their ward rounds and administrative tasks. The post holder will work under the supervision of doctors and will assist them in delivering patient care.
The post holder will gain competence in certain skills (cannulation, phlebotomy, and ECGs).
The post holder will form part of a rota which will provide support for the surgical team seven days a week, including bank holidays.
Main Duties of the Job
1. The post holder is an integral part of the surgical team and will be embedded within the team rather than attached to a specific ward. They will therefore be involved in the care of all the patients under the care of that team despite their geographical location within the hospital.
2. The post holder will work under the supervision of doctors and will assist them in delivering patient care. The post holder will work with some autonomy and will be expected to be self-motivated and use judgment and initiative. The post holder must be comfortable working in a large and multidisciplinary team in a busy and acute environment.
3. The post holder will gain competence in certain skills (cannulation, phlebotomy, and ECGs) and will maintain their level of competence.
4. The post holder will form part of a rota which will provide support for the surgical team seven days a week, including bank holidays.

Job Responsibilities
Communication
1. Develops and sustains working relationships and rapport with the surgical team to ensure effective collaboration.
2. Receive and assist visitors, presenting self to patients, visitors, and staff in a pleasant and cooperative manner.
3. Establish rapport with patients and carers. Develop an awareness of patients' individual needs and communicate this to the registered professional responsible for the patient.
4. Be aware of the ways in which hospitals can create stress in staff, patients, and visitors. Demonstrate empathy and understanding and ensure appropriate staff is made aware of anyone in difficulty.
5. Provide concise, accurate, and legible data and records, maintaining confidentiality in line with Information Governance at all times.
6. Receive, transmit and store/retrieve information as required.
Service Delivery and Improvement
1. Prepare and manage patient lists before the 08.00 handover every morning. Ensure all patients are on the list and in the correct location. Add patients to inpatient lists from take lists.
2. Add all elective patients to inpatient lists.
3. Attend morning handover to bring up patient imaging and blood results.
4. Co-ordinate ward rounds to ensure all patients are seen.
5. Prepare and manage patient notes during ward rounds to ensure all documentation is correctly filed and kept in accordance with information governance policy.
6. Order all blood tests for patients under the direct supervision of the doctors and ACPs. Update patients' investigation results in the required electronic format after scrutiny by a registered medical professional.
7. Input data and maintain databases to record information used for audits, M&M, complications, and Clinical Governance.
8. Order and track notes needed for M&M presentations, audits, and Governance.
People Management and Development
No direct people responsibilities but to mentor, teach, and supervise any new members of the CA team. Assist new members of the Surgical Team to navigate Trust policies and procedures and to access electronic data.
Patient Care Delivery
1. To ensure blood results, imaging, and observations are available to be viewed on ward rounds.
2. To act as a chaperone for clinical examinations when required and in accordance with the trust chaperoning policy.
3. To assist the doctors with their workload by taking blood, cannulating, and recording ECGs.
Learning and Development
1. Attend mandatory training updates as required.
2. Undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and as agreed with the line manager as part of the personal development process.
3. Achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales.
4. Identify own learning needs and jointly plan training requirements with your line manager.
5. Participate in the Trust's appraisal process to discuss how your role will help deliver the best possible care to our patients and help to deliver any changes in service.
