Job Summary:
The Engineering Team seeks a dynamic, organised and proactive Optical Engineer with high standards and technical capabilities to oversee the optical design and analysis with a subcontractor for an exciting and challenging new payload for ESA. The Optical Engineer will be responsible for working with the project team and subcontractor to ensure the payload optical design, assembly, integration, and verification meets the project requirements.
1. Review and feedback on optical design and analysis and documentation, balancing technical requirements with programmatic and budget constraints.
2. Proactively provide support to project teams on the optical design, analysis and build throughout the project lifecycle.
3. Work with subcontractors, customers, and suppliers to deliver an optical design solution and analysis that meets the project requirements from concept through to manufacture, system integration and verification.
4. Advise on risk, programmatic and budgetary issues with respect to proposed designs.
5. Training and mentorship of other team members on optical design, analysis, and technology.
6. Support and contribute to the preparation of bid and proposal material.
Previous Experience:
1. Comprehensive knowledge of Optical Design preferably for space applications with a working knowledge of other engineering disciplines e.g. electronics, opto-mechanics, image processing and electro-optical device physics.
2. Ability to prioritise and support multiple optical design issues in parallel.
3. The candidate should have basic opto-mechanical knowledge.
4. Ability to review designs and plans from subcontractors.
5. Experience of engineering lifecycle management and requirements management.
6. Knowledge in materials and component selection, in the space domain.
7. Desirable if the candidate has experience with AIV of optical payloads.
8. Desirable if the candidate has experience with OGSE.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills:
1. BSc in Optics, Physics or engineering ideally with proven related practical optical design experience.
2. Optical design experience with high proficiency in Optic Studio (Zemax) is essential.
3. Design and analysis software knowledge, e.g.SolidWorks, Ansys, SigFit, Python is desirable.
4. Self-motivated, creative, high attention to detail.
5. Excellent at planning and organising.
6. Ability to work autonomously or within project teams managing their own work and working with subcontractors or suppliers.
7. Recognised ability to deliver.
8. Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
9. Good team working skills and communication skills.
10. Knowledge of spacecraft systems / design would be an advantage including materials.
11. Good knowledge of MS Office Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Microsoft Project.
12. Knowledge of Quality Management requirements.
