Job Title: Development Scientist Elastomer Gel Summary: The Elastomer Gel Development Scientist position is based in Momentive’s Abingdon Laboratory in Oxfordshire, UK, and will play an active role in the design, development and scale-up of silicone elastomers based on Momentive’s specialty Advanced Wound Care (AWC) and Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) Technologies. This position is an exciting opportunity that will involve all aspects of R+D/ Product Development, Process Development/ Scale up and Application Testing.
Responsibilities Include:
* Develop a fundamental understanding of silicone elastomer gels and support New Product Development, Process scale up and offer Production support during the early stages of New Process introduction.
* Develop prototype formulations/products as determined by business needs.
* Design and carry out own experiments during product and process development.
* Carry out application performance testing of products (investigate cure kinetics, peel force, gel penetration and elastomer characterization) in order to understand relative performance advantages and provide both internal and external customers with product recommendations.
* Develop a strong understanding of platinum cure addition chemistry and become the Technical Lead to develop the Abingdon site Technical and Operational capabilities.
* Optimize and drive improvements to existing products and processes.
* Scale up products from the laboratory to pilot & full production scale.
* Interact with colleagues in both Abingdon and Leverkusen to ensure projects progress efficiently.
* Prepare all necessary documentation associated with elastomer technologies including, COSHH Assessments, New Raw Material Approvals, Batch sheets, Specification and QC Leadsheets.
* Work closely with the Leverkusen technology team to validate internal processes and testing.
* Assist with the selection and installation of all necessary laboratory equipment to ensure the site becomes standalone.
* Offer Production/Process support and advice to junior members of the team, production operators and Abingdon’s QC team.
Qualifications:
The following are required for the role:
* BSc in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Material Science/Polymer Science with at least 2 years of experience.
* Strong project leadership skills and demonstrated ability to contribute to new product development and scale-up.
* Proficient in written and verbal communications to leadership, peers, direct reports, and external customers.
* Experience of working and processing polymers.
* Experience of polymer characterization (i.e. rheology, viscometry, IR analysis).
The following are preferred for the role:
* Post Graduate degree in Chemistry or Polymer Science.
* Hands on experience in developing prototype products/formulations.
* Track record of product scale-up and fundamentals knowledge of process Technology.
* Strong understanding of polymerization (platinum cure chemistries) and elastomer technologies.
* Demonstration of scientific understanding and methodology of Experimental Design.
* Strong team ethics and appreciation of NPI project life cycles.
