General Description of Position Under the general direction and supervision of the Campus Dean of Students and the Administrative Director of Residence Life, the Assistant Director of Residence Life directs the day-to-day operations of the campus residence halls. This position advises and supervises student programming in the residence halls, ensures the safety and welfare of all residents, and enforces all residence hall policies and procedures in accordance with College policy. This is a twelve-month, 260-day live-in position, with an unfurnished apartment provided. Hours of work will be arranged on a 40-hour workweek for this full-time, regular position. Evening, overnight, and weekend student supervision are regular parts of the job.
Essential Functions
Assist in Developing Housing Policies:
1. Assists in developing and implementing housing policies and procedures consistent with College policy under the guidance of the Administrative Director of Residence Life.
Policy Enforcement:
2. Enforces established policies and procedures equitably and fairly.
3. Serves as an intermediary between students, resident assistants, and administration.
Supervises Resident Assistants:
4. Interview, select, evaluate, and directly supervise the work of the Resident Assistants in conjunction with the Residence Life Coordinator.
5. Conducts in-service training for Resident Assistants.
Provides Residence Life Programming:
6. In cooperation with the Residence Life Coordinator and the Resident Assistants, plan, organize, prepare, and implement residence life programming options that foster academic, social, cultural, and personal growth.
7. Coordinate programming options with the Student Life Coordinator and plan activities through the campus Prevention Programming Team.
8. Evaluate the success of programming through co-curricular assessment tools.
Coordinates and Supervises Room Inspections:
9. Supervise and/or conduct routine inspections of all rooms and apartments for safety, health, and welfare.
Maintains Student Files:
10. Maintains student files.
11. Reports student status to the Dean of Students and the Business Office.
Maintenance and Upkeep:
12. In cooperation with the campus maintenance department, ensure that the housing facilities and equipment are maintained in operational condition.
Monitors Residence Security:
13. In cooperation with the Campus Safety & Security Coordinator and the security company, ensure that overall security measures are maintained.
14. Continuously evaluates and alters student safety and security measures, if and when needed.
15. Ensures that an accurate inventory of keys is available and current. Ensures buildings are secure.
Supervises Check-In and Check-Out:
16. Checks new students into student housing each term.
17. Checks graduates and students leaving student housing at the end of each term.
Manage Residence Life Budget:
18. Utilize an annual budget to monitor expenditures throughout the year, and to work within the budget with the guidance of the Administrative Director – Residence Life.
Student Housing Tours/Marketing:
19. Assists with showing rooms to prospective students for tours and special events.
20. In collaboration with Public Information and the Administrative Director of Residence Life, develop promotional materials to encourage students to live on campus.
21. Work with Admissions staff to disseminate information to prospective students.
Public Relations:
22. Maintains good public relations with the college community and the community by keeping them apprised of student activities.
23. Encouraged to participate in community organizations.
Coordinates and Performs Other Functions as Requested
24. Organizes, plans, and implements other functions as assigned by the Administrative Director of Residence Life or the Dean of Students.

Marginal Functions
25. Assist in developing and justifying room rate increases.
26. Supervise the use and upkeep of recreational equipment and facilities.
27. Supervise the use and upkeep of computer equipment and facilities.
28. Provide appropriate counseling and referral assistance for students.
29. May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
30. Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
31. Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.

32. Ability to help students with college adjustment-related concerns and make appropriate referrals to the College or community resources as necessary.

35. Ability and skills to articulate Residence Life policies to residents, verbally and in written form.
36. Ability to work, communicate, and develop rapport with students, alumni, faculty/staff, administration, and community groups.
37. Ability and skills to communicate effectively with groups and individuals in problem resolution.
38. Ability to apply fair and equitable disciplinary sanctions upon students who have violated established policy.
39. Ability to organize, develop, and implement student programming for the benefit of residential students.
40. Knowledge and ability to use a computer for word processing, database management, email, and other administrative functions.
41. Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Mobility is occasionally required. The ability to use stairs in a multi-story dormitory is required.
42. Ability to communicate effectively both in writing, in person, and on the phone.
43. Ability to use basic computer skills.
44. The individual must possess the above skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Minimum Qualifications
45. Associate’s degree in psychology, sociology, education, counseling, social work, human development, or a related field. Experience working in Residence Life or in a residence hall setting can be substituted for one year of an Associate’s degree.
46. One (1) year of experience working with students in a college environment, social/human services, education, marketing, or similar occupations where the ability to work with people is important.
47. Six (6) months of experience in a supervisory or managerial capacity, either in paid employment or in a volunteer capacity.
Desired Qualifications
48. Bachelor’s Degree to include at least 12 credit hours of coursework in psychology, sociology, human development, counseling, education, or social work.
49. One (1) year of residence hall experience; living and working with students as a Resident Assistant, Assistant Director of Residence Life, Residence Life Coordinator, or related position.
