Job summary
The Transplant and Cellular Immunology Laboratory, situated at St James's University Hospital in Leeds, is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Consultant Clinical Scientist to join the team. The laboratory supports renal, liver and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) across the West Yorkshire region and is the national centre for composite tissue allograft (CTA)/hand transplantation. Recipient and donor matching and compatibility investigations in support of regional renal transplant and HSCT programmes are performed, as well as Immunogenetic testing for disease associations and adverse drug reactions. This is a forward-thinking and competitive laboratory with a strong focus on, and involvement with, patient management. The Laboratory is accredited by the European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI) and UKAS.
Successful candidates may have the option of entering into the role on a seconded basis, followed by substantive appointment, subject to all parties agreeing.

Main duties of the job
We are looking to recruit a motivated individual with extensive H&I knowledge and excellent leadership skills to join the senior leadership team of the service.
The successful applicant will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive analytical and advisory scientific service in conjunction with consultant colleagues. The role is varied and will involve the active contribution to the development of laboratory policies, implementation of new laboratory assays and techniques, training of medical and scientific staff, managing workload demand and horizon scanning. The applicant will have managerial, clinical, scientific and R&D commitments as described in the Job Description and Person Specification. The role will involve providing direct leadership and clinical input into all of the transplant programmes operated by Leeds Teaching Hospitals, this will include involvement in solid organ transplantation, CTA and HSCT.
Applications are welcome from individuals currently in consultant posts or who hold the necessary qualifications to move directly into such a post (FRCPath in H&I). The Transplant Immunology service operates an on-call service to support the deceased donor renal transplant and hand transplant programmes which includes 24/7 provision of consultant advice and expertise; following the appropriate training, the post holder would be expected to participate in this rota.
Job responsibilities
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
1. Workload Demand Control: Initiate and continue discussions and close liaison with Medical Consultants and CSU Lead Clinicians.
2. Management: Actively contribute to the provision of the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Service within Specialist Laboratory Medicine.
3. Clinical: Actively contribute to the provision of the clinical technical and clinical advisory services of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics.
4. Scientific: Provide leadership and guidance in the development and selection of analytical methods employed.
5. Research and Development: Conceive, initiate, supervise and coordinate programmes of research and development (R&D).
6. Training: Actively contribute to delivery of the Scientist Training Programme (STP) and Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST) programme.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
* First Degree or assessed equivalent level of knowledge and expertise.
* Masters Degree or assessed equivalent level of knowledge and expertise in the speciality of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics.
* Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists.
* Registered as a Clinical Scientist with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Desirable Qualifications
* PhD or equivalent.
Essential Experience
* A very high level of knowledge in both general and highly specialised areas of H&I to consultant level.
* Good knowledge of managerial processes within the NHS.
* Experience in staff recruitment and staff management.
