Working with the Lead Transfusion Practitioner, the post-holder will act as a liaison between the hospital transfusion laboratory and clinical departments.
Main duties of the job
Key responsibilities include:
1. the development and delivery of training and competency assessments to all staff involved in the transfusion process,
2. investigation and reporting of transfusion-related incidents,
3. developing and updating Trust policies and guidelines covering all aspects of transfusion,
4. auditing transfusion practices within the Trust,
5. promoting safe and appropriate use of blood,
6. providing specialist transfusion advice.

Job responsibilities
1. Clinical
1. To be responsible for providing initial and update training and competency assessment for all staff (clinical and non-clinical) involved in the transfusion process.
2. To be responsible for the design and development of training packages for all staff across the Trust relating to all areas of the transfusion process.
3. To act as a resource for advice and support to all staff involved in the transfusion process.
4. To act as a liaison between the hospital transfusion laboratory and clinical departments.
5. Assist with the development/updating of Trust policies and guidelines covering all aspects of transfusion of blood components and blood products. Implement and promote these policies and guidelines within the Trust.
6. To be responsible for the investigation and reporting of incidents and near misses associated with transfusion.
7. To promote awareness and implementation of research-based practices relating to the field of transfusion.
8. Promote high standards of practice at all times and assist in the identification of potential hazards or unsafe practices/procedures and report these to senior members of the Hospital Transfusion Team.
2. Administrative
1. By liaising with the Consultant Haematologist responsible for transfusion, organise monthly Hospital Transfusion Team (HTT) meetings including setting the agenda, preparing required reports and formal minute taking.
2. By liaising with the Consultant Haematologist responsible for transfusion, organise Hospital Transfusion Group (HTG) meetings including setting the agenda, preparing required reports and formal minute taking.
3. To maintain records of staff training and competency assessment involving manipulation of data in spreadsheets and databases.
3. Audit
1. To monitor care given to patients by assisting in regularly auditing transfusion practices within the Trust which will be used to design, implement and review protocols as appropriate. This will involve auditing the transfusion process from the laboratory to patients' bedsides.
2. To be responsible for the design of local audits of all parts of the transfusion process, data collection, detailed report writing and presentation to the Trust.
3. To actively participate in multidisciplinary, Regional, and National audit involving blood transfusion.
4. Development
1. Promote the safe and appropriate use of blood through new initiatives, in liaison with the HTG.
2. Promote and encourage the use of alternatives to transfusion in all clinical areas with the support of the HTG.
3. As a specialist in the field of transfusion, liaise with clinicians in the Trust, peers and external agencies to maintain and improve detailed knowledge of all areas of blood transfusion and keep up to date with current transfusion developments.
4. Attend professional study days/meetings as appropriate and maintain updated knowledge of current professional and clinical developments.
5. Laboratory
1. Liaise with staff from Black Country Pathology Services to ensure that best practice is occurring in the transfusion laboratory.
2. Provide education and updates to transfusion laboratory staff as required.

Qualifications
* Current NMC registration / HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientist
* Evidence of professional and educational development / continuing Professional Development
Experience
* Experience of delivering training and competency assessment
* Experience in clinical audit
* Evidence of projects/research undertaken on own initiative
Knowledge and skills
* Good IT literacy including keyboard skills
* Ability to prioritise and organise work.
* Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
* Relevant knowledge for all aspects of job role including principles and applications of blood transfusion
* Good understanding of laboratory Health and Safety regulations
* Good level of understanding of blood transfusion laboratory techniques
