About the Role
*This is a Fixed Term Position until 31st December 2025*
The Environmental Specialist supports operational activities by ensuring SRS meets environmental regulatory obligations and promotes sustainable practices. This role is more focused on day-to-day environmental operations, monitoring compliance, and ensuring continuous improvement in operational processes.
Reporting to the Associate Director, HSEQ and Risk, the role works closely with operational teams to provide guidance and ensure that environmental considerations are integrated into day-to-day operations. This is an operationally focused role that requires close interaction with field teams, leadership, and external partners.
Position Outcomes / Accountabilities
* Compliance Monitoring: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of environmental legislation and ensure that operational teams comply with regulatory requirements.
* Risk Management: Actively contribute to risk management strategies, identifying environmental risks and mitigating them effectively within the operations.
* Sustainability: Champion sustainable practices in road maintenance activities, ensuring that operations are as environmentally friendly as possible.
* Project Support: Work with leadership teams to implement environmental actions within operational projects, ensuring timely delivery and regulatory compliance.
* Stakeholder Engagement: Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external, to enhance environmental outcomes.
Key Selection Criteria
The Department of Transport and Planning is seeking an experienced Environmental Specialist to integrate sustainability into daily operations. This role is vital in identifying and mitigating environmental risks while driving continuous improvement in environmental performance.
You will work collaboratively to enhance environmental strategies, ensuring compliance and sustainability goals are met. Strong problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to influence internal teams and external stakeholders to promote best practices. A solid understanding of systems for monitoring environmental compliance is required.

Qualifications and Experience
Mandatory
* At least five years' experience in a role with a strong focus on operational environmental management, preferably within the public sector or government services.
* Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related field.
Desirable
* Experience in supporting operational teams in achieving environmental compliance and improving environmental practices on the ground.
* Knowledge of road maintenance and construction industry standards or experience in a similar operational field.
