Broodstock Technician Ardessie Basic Salary from £27,236 to £33,990 per annum Ability to earn up to 15% of your salary in our annual bonus scheme. We have a new and exciting opportunity for a Broodstock Technician to join the team and contribute to the production at our new freshwater Broodstock facility at Ardessie which is in the final stages of construction. If you are ambitious, motivated and want to work with a likeminded team, then this is the role for you. The successful candidate will be required to work 40 hours per week or an average of 40 hours where your shift pattern rotates over more than one week. The successful candidate will also be expected to be part of a weekly alarm rota and will be required to stay on site when on call providing 24 hour cover. Overtime will be available during peak production in the winter/spring months. Accommodation is available in Ullapool as well as transport options to and from Ullapool and Ardessie About the job The Broodstock Technician’s role will operate within all aspects of Broodstock and ova production to deliver high quality eggs selected for the optimal genetic profile which will promote high performance and robustness in the production stock. The job includes, but is not limited to: Conducting all fish husbandry operations making sure that they are completed in accordance with the most up to date site operating standards and that tasks are carried out with utmost care and consideration for staff safety and fish welfare. This will include: Daily checks and mortality removal. Sorting, grading, and tagging of broodstock populations. Checking for readiness to spawn. Spawning and removal of the eggs. Gonad abstraction and removal of the milt. Fertilisation, washing and disinfection of the eggs. Sorting of eggs through automated machines. Final sorting and packing of the eggs for onward transport to the production hatcheries. Ensuring that all stocks under their supervision are always in good health and that great care is taken when handling each individual fish to ensure minimal stress to the fish and that any physical damage is avoided as far as is possible. Measure and record all critical water quality parameters and make adjustments as necessary. Respond to alarms and enact the necessary steps to address the issue giving rise to the alarm. Carry out basic maintenance of equipment. Ensuring strict compliance with biosecurity procedures and follow all necessary disinfection protocols. Ideal candidate The ideal candidate will have previous fish farming experience and be able to demonstrate the following skills and qualities: SVQ in Aquaculture (desirable) Practical knowledge and experience working within broodstock production (desirable) Technical knowledge of fish health and water quality (desirable) Whilst having previous experience would be advantageous we will accept applications from candidates with a flexible approach to working to meet the demands of the job and a positive attitude and willingness to learn. Full training will be provided for the right candidate and this training may include time spent in Mowi’s Norwegian broodstock facilities and potentially other farming locations in Scotland during the interim period whilst the main site is under construction.
