Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.
As the guardian of Scotland’s public water supply, Scottish Water is continually planning for the future. The Water Strategy team is a pan Scotland team responsible for developing and implementing investment and service strategies, together with asset and technical focused policies and procedures, relating to the ongoing supply of excellent quality drinking water to customers.
What you’ll do
As a Senior Service Planner within the Water Strategy team, you will play a key role in shaping the future of Scotland’s water supply. Your responsibilities may include developing investment strategies (Sub-Outcome Approaches) for the water service, which will inform Scottish Water’s Strategic Investment Plan and SR27. You will also contribute to the development, implementation, and review of key strategies—such as Lead Management—and policies, like the Disinfection Policy, that ensure the continued high quality of Scotland’s drinking water.
A key part of your role will involve coordinating the ongoing review of investment prioritisation for the water investment programme. You will support the Investment Planning Scenario process while engaging with both internal stakeholders, such as Water Service Strategy, Capital Investment, and Customer Water Services, and external organisations like the Drinking Water Quality Regulator (DWQR) and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).
You will maintain an overview of research and innovation activities relating to the water service and provide key input to specific research projects at both Scottish Water and UK levels. Additionally, you will collaborate with colleagues in the TSA to develop and review Standards & Specifications for water assets.
Your role will also involve ongoing engagement with and input into the development, implementation, and improvement of Sustainable Investment Decision Making (SIDM) and Water Supply Risk Management (WSRM) processes and systems. Identifying and implementing opportunities to streamline processes and improve productivity will be a key part of your contribution to the team.
What you’ll need
Ideally educated to degree level in a relevant scientific or engineering subject.
You will have a broad appreciation of source-to-tap drinking water systems and the strategic challenges associated with these, with more specific technical knowledge relating to either water quality or supply a bonus.
Understanding of strategic appraisal approaches and techniques and/or project management whilst being able to demonstrate a continuous improvement mindset will be an advantage.
You will also need to be a confident communicator and able to break down complex information into clear and concise language for different audiences, including workshops and the writing of clear and concise reports.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
This is a full-time job, working 35 hours from Monday to Friday. But you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
This role will be a Grade 7. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £41,000. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £51,970.
The team is predominantly based in the Central Belt but applications from all areas of Scotland will be considered as the role is flexible on location with a hybrid online/office workload.
If you’re interested in this role – or know someone who might be – we will be accepting applications until midnight on the 9th of March 2025.
We intend to carry out interviews in early/mid March.
Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. Screening is conducted on our behalf by a third party and must be completed before your start date. Don’t worry - we’ll only start these checks once you’ve accepted an offer.
A few final things worth knowing…
Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!
Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.
As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.
Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
