Providing a comprehensive portfolio of rolling stock services that aid in addressing the challenges that come with an ever-evolving industry.
The Future Technologies team is a critical strategic department in DB ESG, containing the Future Technologies Engineer(s). The Future Technologies Engineer should be prepared to lead change, introduce new technology/processes and working with the Future Technologies Manager, Projects Director and Chief Engineer, achieve the strategic targets of the business, specifically associated with diversification.
You will be responsible for the delivery of development projects within DB ESG where an existing solution does not exist, production of business case documentation, research and development and market analysis to support product and service diversification.
Accountabilities for this Future Technologies Engineer role:
- Responsible for excellence in technical delivery to projects, placing DB ESG in the position of preferred supplier to existing customers and open opportunities with new customers and enabling diversification
- Contribute to the development of effective technical relationships with existing and new customers and supply chain partners
- Responsible for application of a rigorous approach to estimating during the bidding process resulting in accurate and achievable project budgets and high quality competitive bids
- Contribute to a teamwork culture within the Future Technologies team ensuring efficient and effective communication with other areas of DB ESG for the successful definition and delivery of work packages
- Responsible for delivery of work packages agreed to other Engineering and Project teams to time, cost and quality
- To provide technical support, advice and guidance to other team members
- To take responsibility for promoting the company values and contribute to the strategic aims of the business
- Contribute to the definition of new processes and procedures and development of existing processes and procedures within the Future Technologies team

- Ensure that technical delivery of all work packages meet project requirements and industry standards
- Agree and manage work package budgets for the delivery of activity
- Ensure personal utilisation targets are met
- Keep up to date with industry developments including new standards and technology
- Ensure that technical knowledge and skills are developed and maintained as 'best in class'
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience for this Future Technologies Engineer role:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering i.e., Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, Software, Computer Science, or a related technical field
- Strong understanding of railway systems and operations
- Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation
- Experience with relevant software and/or programming languages
- Knowledge of relevant industry standards and regulations
- Ability to conduct technical assessments and feasibility studies and generate business cases
- Familiarity with IoT, cloud computing, and cybersecurity principles
- Systems integration design process, including vehicle modifications
- Knowledge of the product development cycle, Technology Readiness Levels and Rail Industry Readiness Levels.
- Design pack production - modification procedures, risk assessments, minor structural calculations (non-FEA)
- Production, review and approval of procurement specifications
- Project and work package control to time, cost and quality constraints
- Experience of working on multi-disciplined complex engineering projects
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience for this Future Technologies Engineer role:
- Demonstrable knowledge of the railway industry, legislation and approvals processes
- Production, review and approval of quantified risk assessments
- Production, review and approval of Vehicle Acceptance Body (VAB)/Designated Body (DeBo)/Notified Body (NoBo) submissions
- Production, review and approval of Project proposals
- Production, review and approval of minor structural calculations
- Qualified in Finite Element Analysis techniques
- Vehicle Maintenance Optimisation
- Production, review and approval of Vehicle Maintenance Instructions (VMI) and Vehicle Overhaul Instructions (VOI)
- Knowledge and ability to provide advice on UK T&RS vehicle types and related mechanical systems (Bogies, Wheelsets, Power Equipment, Braking Systems, Traction and Propulsion Systems etc.)
