Job overview
The Surveillance nurse acts as a member of the MSK and Surgery team assisting in providing service for the prevention, surveillance, investigation, and control of infection for University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust and other contracted agencies. They will ensure a comprehensive service is provided to the Trust.
Main duties of the job
1. Supports the Consultant for Infection control in the development systems and processes for surveillance and other key indicators for infection control policies and practices.
2. Ensures that accurate and detailed information is collected.
3. Supports the infection control team in the collection and analysis of relevant data for the Surgical Team.
4. Works as part of the Surgical Team to provide, develop and promote a high-quality Surgical Site Surveillance Service promoting excellence throughout the Trust.
5. Be responsible for collating surveillance clinical data for the information of the Surgical Team.
6. Assists with the preparation of statistical information as required and collates and records relevant data and information.
7. Use clinical expertise and judgement to identify patient suitability for inclusion in surveillance.
8. Ensures that data is available for validation and analyses by Consultant in Infection control.
9. Identifies early problems arising and ensures these are reported to the Senior Surveillance Nurse Specialist.
10. Ensures that national SSI audits are accurate and correct.
11. Support the wound care clinic, undertaking dressing changes and uploading of wound photographs to database.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Develops cooperation from staff and strategies for overcoming barriers to understanding.
2. Visits wards and departments as part of the surveillance role.
3. Undertakes surveillance of all patients post-discharge.
4. To provide information to management on surveillance and audit.
5. Assists with providing surgical site surveillance support and advice Trust-wide (as required) with the support of other members of the surgical site surveillance and surgical teams.
6. Assists with the preparation of surveillance and audit reports on behalf of the team.
7. Assists with the development of infection control databases and uses the relevant software to obtain relevant national guidance etc. from the Internet.
8. Maintains timely, accurate and concise records for the clinical service, compiling complex statistical information that will profile the service and inform future strategic development and support the production of board, governance annual reports etc.
9. Works independently within agreed policies/procedures on clinical work, projects etc., keeping manager informed of progress.
10. Works with all members of the surgical and infection control teams and other Trust staff in the establishment and revision of policies/guidelines and other documentation relating to surgical site infection/infection control and ensures implementation across the Trust.
11. Be aware of the need to provide adequate cover on both sites and assist the senior members of the team in ensuring this is provided.
12. Assists with the preparation of surveillance and audit reports on behalf of the team.
13. Communicates sensitive information to patients and relatives concerning their medical condition in an appropriate, compassionate and professional manner.
