Civil Engineer – Construction All Risks (CAR)
Location: Flexible Home or Office-Based (Hybrid Model) – UK
We are thrilled to present an opportunity to join our expanding Technical Lines Engineering team as we enhance Chubb's Construction All Risks and Civil Insurance portfolios. This role will be pivotal in collaborating with our underwriters while engaging with clients and brokers, providing critical risk engineering insights from the initial stages of construction through to the operational handover of the asset. The position will also occasionally require support for the Erection All Risks engineering team in respect of civil engineering-related hazards.
We are on the lookout for a seasoned civil and construction risk engineer with a strong background in civil engineering and experience addressing construction project hazards for insurance purposes. The role would suit a civil engineer willing to engage more widely in respect of construction phase fire and water hazard risk management and training can be delivered accordingly as necessary.
The successful candidate will play a vital role in partnering with our underwriting and claims teams, delivering engineering advice aimed at boosting our underwriting profitability and facilitating the growth of our portfolios and new business prospects. This role encompasses responsibilities across the UK, Ireland, and South Africa regions (UKISA) albeit with emphasis on the former.
This is a UK-based position that allows for flexibility in location and requires travel to client sites across the UK, as well as Ireland and occasional international assignments. Additionally, periodic travel to our London and Glasgow offices for meetings and team collaboration will be necessary.
The role will report directly to the Technical Lines Engineering Manager for UKISA.
Role Purpose:
* Deliver timely and precise technical engineering support with a concentrated focus on civils and property-related risk assessments of building construction projects, also addressing construction phase fire precautions and managing escape of water risks in alignment with current Joint Codes of Practice (e.g. Joint Code of Practice for the Protection from Fire of Construction Sites and Buildings Undergoing Renovation).
* The ideal candidate should possess expertise in civil engineering principles and practices.
* Engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, including underwriters, clients, and their insurance brokers, ensuring effective management of CAR Engineering input from the early conceptual phase of new facilities through to design, construction, and operational handover.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide risk management advice with effective and objective communications to both internal teams and external stakeholders.
* Devise and implement tools based on in-depth knowledge, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness to deliver optimal solutions for risk control and risk reduction for both Chubb and its clients.
* Continue to develop professional engineering expertise within core focus areas. Analyse regional claims to draw valuable insights and integrate lessons learned back into the underwriting process.
* Foster and enhance communication effectiveness and maintain relationships to uphold Chubb’s reputation as a renowned professional and ethical insurer among clients, brokers, and the insurance market.
* Establish and prioritise objectives for risk management programmes in collaboration with underwriters and the insured management teams and brokers.
* Cultivate a philosophy of continuous improvement regarding team dynamics and workflow management.
* Expand knowledge outside of core civil engineering expertise to support underwriting and claims functions through effective education and training.
Qualifications
* Comprehensive knowledge and experience of civils and property related hazards tied to the construction of various facilities, ranging from large-scale residential to industrial operations.
* Proficient understanding of the current Code of Practice related to fire protection on construction sites and the management of escape of water risks is preferable although training will be provided to supplement an otherwise civils related core skillset.
* Prior experience in assessing and managing civil engineering related risks in construction projects is essential.
* Possess a relevant professional qualification in Civil Engineering – additional qualifications related to Fire Engineering, Risk Management, Process Safety, etc. would be an advantage
* Previous experience in insurance engineering gained with a recognised leading insurer or reinsurer is preferred but not critical
* Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to work independently and as a valuable team collaborator.
