Basic Function
The UK indirect tax team sits within the wider UK tax team and is responsible for advising on all indirect tax matters (primarily VAT, Excise, Customs) relating to hydrocarbon and renewables for refining, marketing, and trading in the downstream oil and gas sector. The team works with other corporate functions on tax advisory, planning, structuring, and tax controversy, ensuring compliance with indirect taxes and solving tax-related issues as they arise daily.
We require a hands-on and proactive Indirect Tax Advisor to lead the UK indirect tax team based in our London office. The candidate must be able to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues from front- and back-office departments, and with HMRC. The candidate will have significant experience in indirect tax within the UK and/or the EU and must possess strong technical skills. They will be able to identify risks and issues arising, and effectively manage them internally and with the tax authorities. The ability to identify where a pragmatic approach is possible and sensible where urgent guidance is required. The candidate can have a background in either (or both) VAT or Customs discipline. Where the candidate has a background in one discipline, they must be dedicated to developing expertise in the other. Experience of the downstream oil industry is desirable, but not essential.
Primary Accountabilities/Responsibilities
* Ensuring compliance across the indirect tax disciplines within the business - both in relation to the returns filed and the advice delivered and acted upon.
* Review of the various tax returns for the UK and the EU prepared by the group.
* Identify and act to resolve risks, technical issues, and training needs.
* Define indirect tax requirements for existing and new business activities and products, identify new requirements and work with the business to ensure practical implementation of these requirements in processes and systems.
* This is a very much a business-facing role with a large number of business employees involved in operational matters that drive tax liabilities, which requires the role holder to understand the business functions and their impact on indirect taxes and form strong relationships with business functions.
* Advise, manage, and oversee indirect tax/business projects to ensure tax needs are met.
* Engage and build relationships with tax authorities, customs agents, and external advisors.
* Feed into tax technology implementations and automations with our ERP and IT systems and ensure tax requirements are met.
* Keep abreast of European indirect tax developments, evaluate, and decide on necessary business and process changes, and develop and execute plans to ensure compliance with new tax rules and regulations.
* Act as P66Ls industry representative on indirect taxes.
* Oversee indirect tax requirements for the Asia region related to the Singapore and China offices.
Critical Skills/Leadership Criteria
Required:
* Hold the legal right to live and work in the UK on a permanent basis without restrictions, or meet the relevant criteria for employer sponsorship under the UK points-based immigration system.
* 10+ years relevant industry or Big 4 experience.
* An expertise in VAT and/or Customs legislation for the UK and/or the EU.
* Strong communication abilities, with experience interfacing across all management levels.
* A self-starting individual with proven ability to manage people, issues and problem solve.
Preferred:
* Experience in downstream hydrocarbon and renewable marketing and trading business.
* Experience with handling VAT and/or customs matters outside the UK/EU.
* Professional tax qualification, chartered accountancy, or legal background.
* Experience supervising a team, providing leadership and supporting development.
