Background
The College of Medicine & Health at the University of Birmingham is a major international centre for research and education in medicine and medical sciences. In recent years the College has expanded dramatically, and now has one of the largest intakes of undergraduate students in the UK (over 900/year), and employs over 1000 teaching, research, technical, support and administrative staff.
The MBChB is the College’s flagship programme, comprising 30 different modules / required components, which dominates the life of the College and covers teaching both in a College context and also in a clinical context. Clinical teaching takes place within 15 teaching Trusts and in over 140 general teaching practices across the West Midlands and beyond. The MBChB intake is 400 students bringing the total across the programme to nearly 2,000.
Year Lead Outline
The Deputy Year Lead will support the Year Lead in the effective implementation of a particular Year, or in the case of Years 1 and 2, two years, of the MBChB programme. They will contribute to its strategic development through membership of the MBChB Curriculum Development Committee (CDC) and other groups that may be set up. The Deputy Year Lead is a high level, strategic post responsible to the MBChB Programme Director.
The primary role of the Deputy Year Lead is to support the Year Lead to provide overall academic leadership for the relevant Year and to ensure its content, structure, delivery and quality meet the requirements of the Programme and relevant Trusts and general practices. The post holder will also engage with the delivery of assessments and evaluations in accordance with the University’s Education Strategy.
Main Duties
The Deputy Year Lead is expected to contribute to the quality improvement of the MBChB Programme by:
* Taking an appropriate role in the training and development of OSCE examiners and clinical tutors.
* Reviewing and responding to student evaluations.
* Contributing to the annual MBChB Programme Review.
* Engaging with external organisations such as the GMC as appropriate.
* Keeping abreast of changes in University and National policy regarding higher education and medical education.
The Deputy Year Lead is expected to take a lead in academic support for students in the relevant year by:
* Meeting students who may need additional academic support and guidance.
* Meeting with students whose absence from the programme is greater than the permitted allowance.
* Meeting with students required to re-sit summative assessments and provide guidance.
* Meeting with students with unsatisfactory End of Placement Reviews.
Leadership and Management
* Providing leadership to Year teaching and professional services staff.
* Working with the Year Lead to ensure effective delivery of relevant GMC and Birmingham MBChB expected outcomes.
* Chairing the relevant Year Management Group in the Year Lead's absence.
* Liaising with the relevant Executive Officer and Student Representatives.
* Ensuring Year Handbooks are updated annually.
* Writing and updating relevant module specification forms.
* Keeping students informed of matters affecting them.
* Collaborating with other Year Leads for curriculum integration.
* Contributing to the strategic development of the MBChB programme.
* Disseminating relevant information to Year 3 staff.
* Participating in disciplinary and Fitness to Practise processes when required.
Assessment
* Working with the MBChB assessment group to ensure assessments meet best practice guidelines.
* Managing the timely completion of Year 5 assessments and examinations.
* Ensuring arrangements for external examiner oversight of Year assessments.
* Attending Year Examination Board meetings.
* Responding to external examiner reports on Year assessment.
* Participating in examination invigilation and training.
Teaching and Learning
* Ensuring appropriate timetabling arrangements for modules/components.
* Collaborating with NHS Academies and MBChB professional services staff.
* Providing opportunities for teaching staff development.
* Participating in NHS Faculty development.
Evaluation and Quality Assurance
* Working with the College Quality Office for timely evaluations.
* Contributing to discussions on University surveys and NSS results.
* Establishing peer observation of teaching within the Year.
Membership of Committees and Meetings
* MB ChB Curriculum Committee (monthly).
* Year Management Group (4 times a year).
* Boards of Examiners meetings (usually 5 a year).
* Heads of Academy meetings (4 a year).
* Staff Student Committee (3 times a year).
* OSCE Blueprinting meeting (annual).
* Angoff panels (normally twice a year).
Deputy Year Lead attendance at committees or meetings is encouraged but not mandatory.
Other Duties
* Acting as a Personal Academic Tutor to medical students.
* Involvement in the selection and admission of students.
* Participation in the MBChB Research Advice Committee.
Person Specification
* Fully registered doctor with a licence to practise with the GMC.
* Extensive experience in practice, education and leadership for Associate Clinical Professor level consideration.
* Demonstrated excellence in Learning and Teaching, Leadership and Management.
* Postgraduate qualification in Education (e.g., PGCert) desirable.
* Understanding and experience of various teaching and assessment methods.
* Experience of teaching undergraduates desirable.
* Interest in the longitudinal theme they wish to lead desirable.
Learning and Teaching Requirements
