School Caretaker/Site Manager
Location: Secondary School, London Borough of Haringey
Salary: £110 - £160 a day (DBS enhanced required update service)
Contract Type: Full-Time Long Term (July 2025+)
Reporting to: School Business Manager/Headteacher
Job Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and reliable School Caretaker/Site Manager to oversee the management and maintenance of our school premises in the Borough of Haringey. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the school environment is safe, secure, and well-maintained, contributing to a positive and productive atmosphere for students and staff. This role requires someone with strong practical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Site Security: Ensure the security of the school premises by locking and unlocking buildings, monitoring access, and maintaining security systems. Respond to alarms and incidents outside of school hours as required.
2. Maintenance and Repairs: Carry out general maintenance and repairs to the school buildings and grounds, including plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, and painting. Identify and report major repair needs to the School Business Manager.
3. Health and Safety: Ensure that all health and safety regulations are adhered to, including conducting regular risk assessments, maintaining records, and ensuring compliance with fire safety procedures. Organize and oversee regular fire drills.
4. Cleaning and Waste Management: Supervise the cleaning staff and ensure that all areas of the school are kept clean and hygienic. Manage waste disposal and recycling processes.
5. Grounds Maintenance: Oversee the upkeep of the school grounds, including gardens, playgrounds, and sports fields. Arrange for the cutting of grass, trimming of hedges, and removal of litter.
6. Facility Management: Coordinate the use of school facilities for external events and activities, ensuring that all users adhere to school policies and that facilities are returned to their original condition after use.
7. Resource Management: Manage the inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment. Place orders for new supplies as needed and ensure that all equipment is properly maintained and stored.
8. Contractor Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for external contractors and service providers, overseeing their work on-site and ensuring that all jobs are completed to a high standard.
9. Emergency Response: Act as the first point of contact in the event of an emergency on the school site, coordinating the response and liaising with emergency services if necessary.
10. Team Leadership: Lead and manage the site team, including cleaners and other maintenance staff. Provide training and guidance to ensure high performance and adherence to school policies.
Person Specification:
Experience: Previous experience in a similar caretaking or site management role, ideally within an educational setting. Experience in building maintenance, security, and health and safety is essential.
Skills: Strong practical skills in areas such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, and general maintenance. Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively. Good communication and leadership skills.
Knowledge: A solid understanding of health and safety regulations, including fire safety and risk assessment procedures. Familiarity with school operations is an advantage.
Qualifications: Relevant qualifications in building maintenance or a related field are desirable. Health and safety certification is also preferred.
Physical Requirements: The role involves manual work, including lifting, carrying, and working at heights. The candidate must be physically fit and able to perform these duties safely.
