The Head of Sustainability and Innovation is responsible for leading environmental, energy, and innovation strategies across the regional defence estate in the South East. The role ensures compliance with UK legislation, alignment with corporate sustainability objectives, and fulfillment of client-specific and defence estate requirements.
The position encompasses the line management of a team working on the support of maintenance delivery, refurbishment projects, a significant capital expenditure program, energy efficiency, waste management, ecological enhancements, and fostering innovation through new technologies and partnerships
Key Responsibilities
* Manage and mentor a multidisciplinary team, including Environmental Advisors, a Senior Energy Manager, and Utilities Management Bureau analysts, fostering a collaborative and innovative culture.
* Develop and implement sustainability and innovation strategies aligned with legislative, corporate, client, and defence estate objectives.
* Create and oversee annual sustainability and innovation plans, ensuring clear objectives and alignment with broader organisational goals.
* Lead environmental, energy, and innovation initiatives to deliver measurable outcomes.
* Monitor emerging technologies and market trends, evaluating and piloting solutions to drive innovation.
* Ensure compliance with contractual obligations in addition to UK environmental and energy legislation, providing detailed progress reports for stakeholders.
* Integrate sustainability and innovative technologies into refurbishment projects and capital expenditure programs.
* Drive energy optimisation, waste reduction, and ecological enhancements across the contract.
Key Qualifications
* Experience:
* Minimum 8-10 years of experience in sustainability, innovation, or related fields, with at least 5 years in a leadership'
* Demonstrate expertise in identifying and implementing emerging technologies and market trends to drive innovation and enhance operational efficiency.
* Proven experience in stakeholder engagement, including working with clients, industry partners, and public-sector organisations such as the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO).
* Adept at ensuring compliance, producing detailed reporting, and delivering measurable outcomes.
* A strategic mindset, a results-driven approach and experience in defence or public-sector estates management are highly desirable.
Education:
* Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Business, Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
