Woking Hockey Club is a vibrant, family club in the heart of Surrey with two 3G astroturf pitches beside our own clubhouse. We believe in the principle of “hockey for all” and our senior and junior teams compete throughout the South East and we have a highly competitive Master’s section.
We have recently undertaken a review of the club and are looking to appoint a Director of Hockey to help develop the vision of ‘The Woking Way’ and work with the club committee to deliver it for the 2025/6 season and beyond.
Job Description
The successful candidate will provide strategic direction, leadership and oversight of all coaches and coaching programmes for men’s, women’s and junior sections of the club.
You will work with the chair of WHC’s playing committee to recruit talented players to the club and will also ensure a natural path for junior players to progress to the adult sections.
You will also work with the main club committee to ensure a regular and effective communication of the coaching programme and the development of the club’s vision.
As Director of Hockey you will oversee all aspects of The Woking Way, ensuring its smooth operation and success. You will report to the Chair of WHC’s Playing Committee.
Main responsibilities
1. Provide hockey excellence and opportunity for all, overseeing the entire hockey programme, including the development and implementation of strategies to improve performance and participation.
2. Provide a five-year plan for the above.
3. Review the pay structure of coaches and job descriptions through observations and interim reviews.
4. Manage the budget for the hockey programme, including equipment purchase, travel expenses and other financial aspects as outlined by Chair of WHC’s Playing Committee.
5. Implement and oversee WHC’s “The Woking Way” approach to coaching and player development.
6. Improve and refine the coaching expertise of all coaches across the whole club.
7. Recruitment of all paid, lead, volunteer and support coaches across the whole club, delegation to Head of Boys and Head of Girls Colts for their areas of responsibilities.
8. Prepare and refine job descriptions for coaches.
9. Performance management of all paid coaches.
10. Ensure that appropriate coaching schemes exist across junior and senior hockey and are fit for purpose.
11. Plan and deliver four club wide coaching workshops per season; each with a specific area of focus under WHC’s “The Woking Way” approach to coaching and player development.
12. Share club-wide selection criteria and manage weekly selection with team/section captains having final say on selection should it be required.
13. Attend committee meetings as requested.
14. Cover other sessions as required by Chair of WHC’s Playing Committee.
15. Perform any other reasonable duties as directed by Chair of WHC’s Playing Committee.

To be agreed with the successful candidate and will be dependent upon experience.
