We have a fixed term role for 1 year in the Respiratory Physiology team at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
We are looking for a highly skilled Healthcare Scientist who is keen to expand their leadership skills. You will be expected to undertake several complex clinics per week including non-invasive ventilation, as well as professionally manage the respiratory healthcare science team and undertake the day-to-day running of the department. We have close links to the university so part of your role will involve teaching students.
Main duties of the job
1. Manage the respiratory physiology department with day-to-day responsibility ensuring high quality test results, and safety of staff and patients.
2. Have specialist knowledge in respiratory physiology (respiratory, sleep medicine and NIV).
3. Alongside the consultant clinical scientist to develop and improve clinical service provision.
4. Undertake highly complex procedures in Sleep and lung function testing.
5. Report highly complex assessments in Sleep and lung function testing.
6. Participate in the Home Non-Invasive Ventilation clinics and sleep clinics.
7. Teach respiratory physiology to students, nurses and members of the lay public.
8. Conduct scientific research in sleep and lung function testing.
9. Provide on-site supervision in the adult services for respiratory physiology investigations and treatment.
10. Act as an authorised signatory, understanding of funding and budgets.
11. Have a flexible approach to working that matches the clinical needs of the service, involving on-site and cross-site working.

Job responsibilities
1. Clinical Responsibilities:
1. Undertake, analyse, and interpret highly specialist diagnostic investigations for the assessment of sleep breathing/non-sleep breathing disorders and respiratory disorders in adults, including polysomnography, capillary and transcutaneous blood gas monitoring.
2. Undertake, analyse, and report on highly complex assessments of lung function in patients with a wide range of disorders including bronchial provocation testing.
3. Undertake consultant level review of sleep studies and provide a clinical review of the patient back to the referrer.
4. Plan and adjust clinical treatment plans relating to respiratory and sleep.
5. Support multidisciplinary staff on the use and type of CPAP equipment for acute and elective admissions, and initiating, assessing, and evaluating this therapy as required.
6. Transition non-invasive ventilation clinics from paediatric to adult service with the multidisciplinary team.
7. Assess training and instruct junior staff in the techniques and policies used within the department.
8. Provide expert clinical and scientific advice to service users on the range of investigations and treatment.
9. Communicate highly complex information to patients and their carers regarding the outcomes of a range of test results.
2. Managerial Responsibilities:
1. Corporate management of the adult respiratory physiology services at St Georges Hospital.
2. Attend Care Group meetings and clinical governance meetings to report on service and staff feedback.
3. Review existing processes and develop new protocols for additional services.
4. Manage the training programme for new staff members including lecture sessions and DOPs.
5. Perform HR procedures in the department in accordance with the trust policy.
6. Ensure the calibration, maintenance, trouble shooting, quality assurance and infection control of lung function and sleep equipment is maintained.
7. Act as local work-based assessor within sleep, non-invasive ventilation and lung function.
8. Manage data systems for sleep diagnostics and treatment and lung function testing.

Person Specification
Experience
Essential
* Experience in the performance, analysis and interpretation of basic (oximetry) through to highly complex sleep diagnostic tests (Polysomnography) in an adult setting.
* Experience in non-invasive ventilation, its assessment and management of patients with a wide range of conditions including OHS, COPD and neuromuscular patients.
* Experience in the performance and interpretation for a range of lung function tests including spirometry, respiratory mechanics assessments, field exercise testing, and arterial/capillary blood gases.
Qualifications
Essential
* Degree in a Biological subject and ARTP Part 1 and Part 2 (a pass for the January exams for ARTP Part 2 will be considered) or equivalent qualification.
* Experience in respiratory physiology Services.
* Experience of previous effective supervision.
* Continuing Evidence of CPD.
Desirable
* Post-graduate courses in sleep and non-invasive ventilation.
* Have HCPC/RCCP registration.
