About the team This role is part of our Media Literacy Policy team which forms part of Ofcom’s Strategy and Policy Team. Media literacy ensures that people can navigate content safely and flourish online. Ofcom defines media literacy as “the ability to use, understand and create media and communications across multiple formats and services”. Media literacy therefore has a foundational role to play in Ofcom’s overall mission to “make communications work for everyone”. Purpose of the Role Our 3-year strategy prioritizes developing the media literacy skills of children and young people, older people and those most likely to be impacted by online harm. We have chosen to focus the delivery of our programme primarily in areas experiencing financial deprivation. We are looking for someone to deliver those strategic aims. In addition, we have a relentless focus on ‘what works’ so sharing the insights from the work we commission, through effective evaluation and dissemination is a key part of this role. We are also working hard to make media literacy everyone’s business, and for this role that means embedding media literacy into the digital inclusion agenda throughout the UK. What you are expected to deliver in this role: Manage the organisations that are delivering our media literacy community and skills development work: Maintaining supportive relationships with the organisations delivering media literacy interventions for Ofcom; ensuring milestones are met, obstacles are overcome, and learnings are shared. Developing a community of excellence between the organisations we commission to create a culture of mutual sharing and learning; Sharing insights and lessons learned from these interventions with organisations well-placed to deliver media literacy activities and those who fund them through our networks and beyond. Engage with education authorities and schools to encourage and support media literacy education: Commissioning Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses for teachers, ensuring the impact of the training is evaluated and signposting participants on to further resources. Working with regional partners to understand what works in media literacy education and sharing our learnings with teachers, senior leaders and relevant education authorities. Collaborating with Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs) in England to ensure their schools are equipped to support and signpost parents with a view to developing this into a national approach. Continue to build on the digital inclusion infrastructure : Maintain our ‘place-based’ model of media literacy where local experts build on the existing offer in their community and embed media literacy into local digital strategies and/or digital inclusion offers Develop this model in Northern Ireland Learn from and collaborate with digital inclusion experts including by engaging with the Digital Inclusion Alliance Wales and the LGA’s Digital Inclusion Network in England as well as any forthcoming equivalents in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Knowledge sharing: Drawing implications from this work for our wide media literacy programme – especially making media literacy everyone’s business. Embedding our insights into policy development and exploring the implications across the organisation’s wider work.
