Job Purpose
Reporting to the Head of Process Safety, as a Principal Process Safety Engineer (Strategy), you will support us in driving towards achieving our strategic priority of ‘Providing a safe and great place to work’. You will own and be accountable for the ongoing development of the Process Safety Management Framework that is applied across our high hazard facilities and capital projects which will support the delivery of best-in-class performance and reduce incidents. You will be accountable for developing a methodology and framework for hazard studies and quantifiable risk assessment of our high hazard locations, including the development of scenarios associated to each hazard type, the likelihood of each scenario, and subsequent consequence modelling of the most foreseeable events.
Accountabilities & Responsibilities
* Develop, own and maintain the Process Safety Management Framework, along with the standards and guidance that support its embedment. Review in line with the findings of incident investigations to ensure causal factors are addressed.
* Lead on corporate process safety competence through establishing the community of practice around Process Safety by development of the Centre of Excellence and continuous improvement capability utilising specialist consultant support where necessary.
* Build and maintain relationships with Directors and Senior Leadership to provide Process Safety technical guidance, advice and support teams across Operations and Engineering to embed inherently safer design principles throughout all stages of the project life cycle and ensure there is capability to deliver hazard studies that are fit for purpose, with on-going asset risk management throughout the operational asset life.
* Own, develop and embed a proactive assurance model of the systems and processes within the management framework to ensure they are effective, engage with those undertaking operational activity and project work around our high hazard assets.
* Ownership of the Community of Practice and associated centres of excellence to ensure knowledge sharing of best practice and organisational learning is delivered effectively through a variety of techniques such as step up sessions, road shows, briefings and webinars.
Technical Skills & Experience
* Experience working in High Hazard environments associated with explosive atmospheres and toxic gasses. Including the management of Methane, Hydrogen, and Toxic gases would be preferable.
* Knowledge of process safety principles, theory, and experience in application and implementation. Knowledge of regulatory requirements under key legislation relating to Process Safety, for example; COMAH, DSEAR, PSSR etc.
* Proven communication skills (both verbal and written) with the ability to influence and persuade strategic decisions at a senior level (including executive directors). Along with experience working with external regulators and a unionised work force.
* Competent to act as a Subject Matter Expert on regulatory and technical issues relating to Process Safety, with the skills to effectively translate complex technical theory into simple messaging allowing effective communication to all.
* Strong leadership and people management skills, especially motivation, communication, presentation skills, influencing and persuasion.
Qualifications
* Engineering degree level educated. Working towards or having recently obtained a post-graduate qualification (e.g. chartered status).
