About the department:
The Science department is based close to Main House and the centre of the school’s site, in a dedicated suite of laboratories. The department is led by Mrs Susie Pickett. The department, supported by a team of 3 part-time technicians, comprises nine Science teachers, who support one another as a strong team in the delivery of Science at Key Stages three, four and five, including GCSE, Level 2 BTEC, and A Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

About this post:
We are looking to appoint a committed and experienced Senior Science Technician to run and provide prep room support to the teachers in science department and to Gardner House. Duties will include:
* Overseeing the running of the Science prep room and the work of 2 Science Technicians.
* Ensuring that a safe, effective and efficient laboratory technical service is provided for use by students and teaching staff.
* Providing technical advice and assistance in the classroom to support students and to assist teaching staff with the provision of learning activities by ensuring the prep room is well resourced, organised and developed with equipment kept in good working order, including trialling experiments particularly PAGs for ‘A’ Level Chemistry and Biology.
* Co-ordinating the use and development of practical resource and facilities within the science department.
* Ensuring that the health and safety requirements and other relevant regulations are in place and adhered to, including the completion and recording of necessary checks and risk assessments and by keeping up-to-date with current procedures and practices and attending necessary training courses.
* Ensure that the preparation areas, storerooms, glassware and equipment are in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
* Overseeing the safe treatment and disposal of used materials, including hazardous substances, and responding to actual or potential hazards.
* Undertaking some duties at lunchtime and breaktime as required.
* Overseeing stock control, compiling orders, liaising and/or negotiating with suppliers, organising the maintenance, repair, calibration and testing of equipment and maintaining appropriate records.
A comprehensive induction programme is offered, and ongoing professional development is supported through INSET days and training opportunities. Lunch is provided free of charge, daily, as is parking within the school’s beautiful grounds.
The above list of duties is not exhaustive, and the post-holder may be required to perform such other duties as may be, from time to time, deemed necessary by the Headmaster. This is a non-residential post.
Person specification:
Essential Qualifications and Experience:
* GCSE or equivalent, including English and Mathematics, and Further Education qualifications.
* Experience of working in a relevant discipline within a laboratory or similar environment.
* Working knowledge of putting in place and monitoring regulations/legislation relating to laboratories such as health and safety and COSHH requirements.
* Sense of humour and an inclination to embrace challenge.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills demonstrating an understanding of, and commitment to, professionalism and teamwork.
* Able to work flexibly to meet deadlines and respond to unplanned situations
* Efficient and meticulous in organisation
* Recognition of the importance of personal responsibility for health and safety.
* Empathy and patience, maintaining the highest standards of professionalism in the face of challenge.
* Strong desire to engage with, and to promote the school’s aims and ethos.
Desirable:
* A degree or other higher qualification relating to science.
* Evidence of resilience and professionalism in the face of challenge. Readiness to identify and respond to new challenges.
Hours:
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 8.20 am until 4.30 pm during term-time. (Note: academic terms are typically shorter than those in the state-maintained sector, and school holidays are therefore significantly longer).
Attendance at parents’ evenings and school events outside these hours from time to time, as well as INSET days towards the beginning or end of school holidays.

This role is deemed to be one of working in regulated activity, meaning that the post-holder may expect to come into unsupervised contact with children and young people frequently in the discharge of their duties on-campus. As such, the expectations of conduct, required of all adults working at More House School, apply to this position, as does a full Safer-Recruitment vetting process of any appointee. A key responsibility of all adults working within the School is that of ensuring the effective safeguarding of all children and young people, through adherence to the School’s policies; full-training is given.
