Job Title: Shop Assistant Location: HMP Dovegate, Uttoxeter ST14 8XR Working Hours: Full-time, 40 hours Salary: £24,068 per annum Are you looking for a rewarding role where you can make a real difference? We are seeking a Shop Assistant to join our team at HMP Dovegate, a Category B male prison with an operational capacity of 1,100 prisoners. In this role, you will work directly with prisoners, providing essential retail services within the prison environment while maintaining security, compliance, and efficiency. About the Role As a Shop Assistant, you will support the Stores and Shop Manager in delivering retail services across the establishment. You will be responsible for stock management, ensuring the security and safety of all products, and assisting with the overall smooth running of the shop. This role requires manual handling, including lifting, carrying, and moving stock. You must be physically capable of handling deliveries and stocking shelves in a secure environment. Key Responsibilities: Carrying out stock checks, provision planning, and ordering from various suppliers. Maintaining security and food safety of all stock items during delivery, storage, and distribution. Reacting to complaints and issues, working with the retail team to resolve them efficiently. Supervising and supporting prisoners who are involved in retail operations. Following all Health & Safety and Food Safety Regulations to ensure compliance. Assisting with any additional duties as required within the capabilities of the role. What You’ll Need to Succeed: Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy (or equivalent GCSE qualifications). Strong IT skills, including proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook. Good supervisory and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively. Resilience and a basic understanding of conflict resolution and risk management. The ability to work in a secure and challenging environment. A proactive, problem-solving approach and the ability to work independently. Physically capable of manual handling tasks, including lifting and moving stock. Why Join Serco?
