About the role
This is a varied role for someone comfortable wearing many hats and multi-tasking. As the Senior Marketing Manager/Head of Marketing, you will report directly to the Publisher and take the lead in driving key initiatives to boost newsletter signups and paid subscriptions. You will be responsible for budgeting, forecasting, strategic marketing planning, and execution, while managing vital partner relationships to ensure growth and engagement.
In this role, you will oversee all marketing activities for The Knowledge, ensuring each campaign aligns with our business goals and stays within budget. Your responsibilities will include leading advertising, sponsorships, events, social media, digital marketing, PPC, customer care, CRM, and partnership strategies.
Main Responsibilities
Budgeting/Forecasting & Analysis
* Develop and manage the annual budget for newsletter signups, outlining acquisition costs (CPA/CAC) by channel, along with forecasting unsubscribes and overall list growth.
* Budget and forecast newsletter conversion to paid subscriptions and revenue, while accurately predicting churn rates and adjusting strategies accordingly.
* Provide regular, detailed reports to the Publisher and business owners, analysing KPI performance against budget and offering insights into the reasons behind any variances.
Marketing
* Develop and execute a comprehensive marketing strategy to sustain and accelerate the growth of The Knowledge.
* Collaborate closely with the Publisher to drive growth initiatives, optimize marketing efforts, and refine newsletter strategies for maximum impact.
* Oversee and manage key marketing activities, including sponsorships, partnerships, and collaborative efforts to boost brand presence.
* Serve as the brand guardian, ensuring consistency across all communications, user journeys, creative assets, and marketing collateral.
* Partner with the Editorial team to grow and engage The Knowledge’s social media presence across platforms (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook).
* Maintain brand integrity by collaborating with designers and copywriters to produce cohesive, on-brand content and materials.
Partnership/Agency ownership
* Oversee the email marketing platform, Beehiiv, managing development requests, feature enhancements, and platform optimisation.
* Take ownership of website and app management, ensuring seamless integration of branding, design, UX, and marketing content for a cohesive user experience.
* Lead and manage external agencies and partners to drive newsletter growth, enhance brand awareness, and deliver impactful marketing campaigns.
Person Specification
* In-depth knowledge of subscription and recurring revenue models, including revenue recognition and forward liability management.
* Strong understanding of Customer Lifetime Value (LTV) and its role in driving strategic decision-making within the business.
* Advanced Excel skills (e.g., VLOOKUP’s, pivot tables) with proficiency in other Microsoft Office applications for effective data analysis.
* Intermediate proficiency in Google Analytics to track, measure, and optimize marketing performance.
* Proven experience in planning and executing marketing campaigns, ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget.
* A data-driven, test-and-learn approach to marketing, constantly optimizing strategies based on insights and performance metrics.
* A collaborative team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to work independently or as part of a team while adapting quickly and going beyond your remit.
* Strong organisational, time-management, and numeracy skills, with the ability to multitask, prioritise effectively, and maintain attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
* Familiarity with Stripe and its reporting capabilities for tracking and analysing subscription data.
* Experience with Beehiiv or similar newsletter platforms (e.g., Substack), with an understanding of their functionalities and best practices.
* Basic knowledge of design tools like InDesign and Photoshop.
* Previous experience of using Google Tag Manager.
The Knowledge is based in a busy business centre in north Notting Hill. The role requires regular hours of work from Monday to Friday. Some flexibility in working hours may be required and some working from home is possible. Minimum 2 days in the office.
