Job overview:
This position would suit someone who is looking to progress from a Supervisory role into Management. This is an exciting opportunity for the right person to use and develop their current skill set within the waste management and recycling sector. Previous experience of working within Waste Management and Recycling would be preferred.
The role would suit an individual who enjoys working outdoors, can lead by example, is enthusiastic with a strong commitment to continuous improvement, and has the ability to embrace change. This is not solely an office-based position, as you will be required to undertake onsite practical work.
Job Title: Operations Manager
Location: Cardiff
Salary: £35,000 - £40,000 dependent on experience
Hours: 7.00am-5.00pm (you will on occasion be required to work outside these hours due to your position).
Responsibilities for the job role:
1. Overall responsibility for all depot operations and administration in the Cardiff Depot, including the Waste Transfer Station, Site Office, and Weighbridge.
2. Assist with all environmental issues within the above Departments and liaise with Natural Resources Wales (NRW), in support of the Compliance Manager, Quality Manager, and Divisional Operations Manager.
3. Assist with Health & Safety issues within the Transfer Station and Site Office and liaise with the HSE, in support of the Companies Group Health & Safety Manager. Ensure that all operations are carried out in a safe, efficient, economical, and timely manner in accordance with Company Policies and Procedures.
4. Ensure that all operations on site are conducted safely and that all staff are fully inducted and have received adequate training for their roles. Produce Risk Assessments and Method Statements for all tasks undertaken. Identify areas where training is required and maintain a record of training received. Review training requirements and report findings annually, in support of the H&S Training Coordinator.
5. Ensure compliance within the operational area with all Company procedures, statutory legislation, and industry good practice. Maintain a professional relationship with local business unit residents and manage fugitive emissions within the operational area down to an absolute minimum.
6. Oversee the transportation of waste to ensure timely and efficient loading without contaminating air, land, or water sources.
7. Develop and maintain Quality Assurance specifications, performance of recycling, and performance of subordinates. Maximise recycling and recovery rates within the Waste Transfer area in line with company objectives and ensure productivity is consistently at its highest level to meet all financial budgets.
8. Lead the development, promotion, quality, and implementation of increased recovery and recycling programs, supported by the senior management team.
9. Develop an understanding of the operational issues within the Depot and progressively develop a plan and implement change to improve management, cost control, and profitability of the site due to increased recovery and recycling programs.
10. Review and report on monthly cost statements produced for the Depot by the Finance Division along with variance reporting and statistical analysis, ensuring that necessary internal Depot controls are in place for monitoring.
11. Produce and maintain accurate and timely Department budgets, cost reviews, and monthly commentary reports, supported by the Divisional Operations Manager.
12. Responsible for all maintenance requirements, maintenance administration, and plant inspections within the Depot, including traffic management and site security.
13. Organise shift cover when required, ensuring shift complement is maintained and conduct return-to-work discussions with team members returning from absences. Liaise with HR regarding employee welfare or disciplinary meetings, maintaining staff consistency.
14. Adopt a flexible attitude towards work where on occasion the post holder may be requested to assist operations outside normal working hours or undertake onsite practical work, including providing cover for the weighbridge operator if required.
Experience and qualifications:
1. Hold a Certificate of Technical Competence (COTC) or be working towards being the Technical Competent Manager (TCM). WAMITAB Level 4 Transfer/Treatment Non-Hazardous.
2. Maintain an up-to-date operational knowledge of waste recycling best practices.
3. IOSH Managing Safely qualification preferred but not essential.
4. Training will be provided for the right candidate subject to successfully completing the relevant probationary period.
