The Role
Are you enthusiastic about delivering excellent customer service and passionate about digital technology and reading? We have a fantastic opportunity for an Apprentice to join our friendly team at Weston Library.
As the first point of contact for library information in our multi-use building, you will play a crucial role in supporting our diverse community. From assisting with library and council enquiries and self-service kiosks to organizing community and children's activities, your day will be varied and rewarding.
If you haven't visited a library recently, you might be surprised by what we offer! From Lego groups and Code Clubs to IT courses and a wide range of reading activities, our library is a hub of innovation and learning. We're looking for someone who is excited about digital technology and eager to share their passion with others.
This role is 37 hours per week, working Monday to Friday, with a requirement to work alternate Saturdays.
You will receive comprehensive in-house training and study for an Apprenticeship in Library, Information, and Archive Services Assistant Level 3 with ‘Let Me Play Education’ over 18 months. Further information about the course, including a programme guide can be found at We also offer ongoing peer support and a variety of Council training courses to help you develop your skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Support customers with library enquiries, self-service kiosks, computers, Wi-Fi, and the Local History Library.
Encourage a love of reading through various promotional activities.
Maintain quality book and library stock collections using appropriate stock management tools.
Inspire and assist people in using the technology available at the library.
This position is exempt under the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
Valid driving licence and own transport, or ability to travel between libraries across North Somerset using public transport is an expectation for this role.
About You
We are looking for an individual who is passionate about customer service, helping people find the information and resources they need, and who possesses the following skills and experience:
A keen interest in digital technology and a passion for reading.
Excellent communication skills and a wide general knowledge.
Hard-working, self-motivated, and receptive to change.
Ability to work well within a cohesive team and adapt to working at different libraries across North Somerset.
Essential Criteria:
3 GCSE’s grade C to A* (4-9) including Maths and English, or equivalent.
Experience of using ICT including word processing and spreadsheets.
Be able to perform activities after being shown how to do them.
Be polite and courteous.
Excellent communication skills on the phone, face-to-face and in writing.
Be self-motivated and able to prioritise tasks and organise time effectively
Desirable Criteria:
Experience of working or volunteering with the public
