Commencing as soon as possible we are seeking to appoint a confident, caring and organised person to join our team in the role of Principal First Aid and Welfare Officer. This role will require applicants to assess the medical and welfare needs of students, staff, visitors and contractors and to administer front-line First Aid. The successful candidate will ensure that students with ongoing medical needs are supported in school in line with their Individual Health Care Plans, administer approved medication to students and maintain records and reports, including those required for statutory requirements. Training and first aid certification can be provided if suitable applicants do not currently hold these.

Reporting to: Deputy Director of Finance and Resources - IT and Facilities Lead
MAIN JOB PURPOSE:
This role will require the postholder to assess the medical and welfare needs of students, staff, contractors and visitors, and to administer front-line First Aid. The postholder will ensure that students with ongoing medical needs are supported in school in line with their Individual Health Care plans, administer approved medication to students and maintain records and reports, including those required for statutory requirements.
The postholder will be responsible for liaising with the schools vaccination team and managing appointment schedules. Where time permits the postholder will also support the school's administrative team in a number of other administrative duties.
The postholder must hold a full three day First Aid at work certification as a minimum requirement. Training and first aid certification can be provided if suitable applicants do not currently hold these.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* To assess First Aid problems presented by students, staff, visitors and contractors, taking appropriate action in the event of emergency and communicating with staff and parents as necessary.
* To accompany students, where the need arises, to hospital and to remain with them until their parents/carers arrive.
* To be responsible for administering prescribed medication which are necessary to be taken by students during the school day, ensuring that parental consent is obtained and recorded.
* To be responsible for the safe-keeping of prescribed medication in a locked cupboard.
* To liaise with feeder schools in order to assess students’ potential medical needs prior to their attendance at Cotham School.
* To attend to minor medical needs, such as administering plasters, bandages, etc as required, and to look after students who feel unwell. In the event of more serious medical concerns to make the necessary arrangements for parents to be contacted and the student to be collected.
* To advise on general health matters as presented by students, staff, visitors and contractors and to communicate with parents as appropriate.
* To network with internal and external health agencies on a regular basis. To liaise with a range of health agencies with a view to seeking advice and support on behalf of students with specific health issues.
* To coordinate, administer and maintain Individual Health Care Plans for students with specific medical needs in conjunction with parents and other relevant health care professionals.
* To meet with students returning to school after an injury which impacts mobility, hearing or sight and to agree to a personal emergency evacuation plan (PEEP).
* To make arrangements for vaccinations sessions held by the Local Authority for the relevant age groups of students, undertaking the necessary communications and ensuring that appropriate records are completed and retained.
* To enter all student medication information into the schools’ management information system, maintain accurate records in accordance with new and changing medical needs. To inform staff of relevant information including for all school trips.
* To liaise with the Inclusion Team and Learning Coordinators regarding confidential student medical matters.
* To keep an up to date accident record book, including details of injuries, make any required RIDDOR reports for accidents at work, review for patterns and report to the Health and Safety Committee.
* To be a proactive member of the schools Health and Safety Committee, attending meetings and walkarounds as required.
* To carry out monthly stock audits of all First Aid boxes and First Aid kits throughout the school (including those used for trips) and ensure that they are replenished. Ensure that all emergency First Aid equipment is in good working order. To perform regular checks on the defibrillators to ensure that the batteries and pads are in good working order.
* To be responsible for maintaining stocks and ordering medical supplies and equipment in order to ensure adequate emergency medical resources exist within the school.
* To keep an accurate list of all staff accredited with First Aid at Work, together with dates of expiry, and to arrange training to ensure that an appropriate number of staff are trained in these skills.
* To take responsibility for the medical rooms, ensuring that these rooms are kept clean and tidy.
* To maintain confidentiality of information acquired whilst undertaking duties for the school.
* To manage the First Aid budget. This will include placing orders for First Aid and medical supplies.
* To be responsible for own continuing self-development, undertaking training in medical areas and participating in annual appraisals.
* To undertake any other administrative duties appropriate to the grading of the post as required. This may include reprographics work, typing, filing, covering reception, etc.
