This project aims to develop enhanced surfaces using laser texturing techniques to improve the performance of lubricated contacts pertaining to conditions encountered in novel electrified propulsion systems. The project will aim at investigating the contact failures induced by electrical currents such as electric erosion. Enhanced surfaces using laser texturing techniques will be developed in order to minimise occurrence of such damages. The approach will include experimental investigations along with the development of numerical models to achieve the desired outcomes. We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to conduct cutting edge research in laser texture designs and lubrication study of rotary components. Considering the harsh operating conditions of electrified propulsion systems, we aim to advance understanding of design methodologies and modelling practices in such applications. Our goal is to deliver novel and efficient EV powertrain component designs. By accelerating our understanding of preventative measures to electrical erosion, we will support the development of new design standards and lubricant requirements that can be utilised by many industries to streamline their design processes, while also reducing R&D and production costs. As a PhD student, you will work with both academics from the Tribodynamics research group at Loughborough University and will also have the opportunity to collaborate with the engineering teams within the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC). This will provide you with a real-world experience in working within an industrial company, as well as experiencing the workplace and culture within it. The MTC is an independent Research and Technology Organisation (RTO) aimed at de-risking and accelerating the adoption of disruptive technologies within the UK manufacturing sphere. Supported by the UK government, the MTC works closely with industrial partners and other research organisations to deliver world leading innovation across all levels of the UK’s industrial landscape, from SMEs and start-ups to OEMs and large-scale global manufacturers. For more information, please visit the MTC website. Entry requirements: We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated candidate, with a 1st or high 2:1 degree in mechanical or automotive engineering or other similar disciplines. The candidates will have some experience in computer programming and preferably with previous experience in Contact Mechanics and Tribology. How to Apply: Applications should be made online via the above ‘Apply’ button. Under programme name, select ‘Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering/Electronic, Electrical & Systems Engineering’ and quote the advert reference number FP-RR-2025/MTC002 in your application. To avoid delays in processing your application, please ensure that you submit your CV and the minimum supporting documents. The following selection criteria will be used by academic schools to help them make a decision on your application. English language requirements: Applicants must meet the minimum English language requirements. Further details are available on the International website ( http://www.lboro.ac.uk/international/applicants/english/ ). Funding Details Additional Funding Information The studentship is for 3 years and provides an enhanced tax-free stipend of £25,000 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK rate. Due to funding restrictions, this is only available to those eligible for UK fees. As this position is sponsored by the MTC, any successful candidate would need to pass the sponsor’s own security checks prior to the commencement the PhD. £25,000 per annum. Fully Funded (UK only)
