Job Description
Established in 2022, Aston Martin Performance Technologies (AMPT) is a fast-growing business within the Aston Martin Racing Performance Group. Our vision is to deploy our F1 knowledge and technical expertise to deliver high-performance engineering projects outside of Formula One™.
AMPT has already established its position as a technological trend-setter - from producing highly successful automotive composite Body in White programmes, to heading global motorsport programmes. As our programme portfolio develops, we are looking for a range of driven, world-class engineers to join us on this exciting journey.
AMPT is based in Silverstone, amidst the widely renowned Aston Martin Racing Technology Campus. With the iconic circuit on one side and rural countryside on the other, the new Campus symbolises our core values: innate competitive desire and a drive for sustainable efficiency, in an environment conceived to nurture innovative and creative thinking.
We have a new opportunity to be part of the Aston Martin Performance Technologies team in the role of Mechanical Design Engineer.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering 3D and 2D mechanical and/or surface designs from concept through to production across internal and external (non-F1) customer projects. This is a fast-paced role where innovation, attention to detail, and collaboration are essential. The role spans fields such as Automotive, Lightweight Structures, Composites, 3D Printing, and Electrification.
You will also represent AMPT externally, ensuring a high technical and professional standard is maintained with customers, partners, suppliers, and institutions.
You will be responsible for:
* Producing RFT (Right First Time) mechanical and/or surface designs using 3D and 2D CAD tools, delivering to time, budget, and specification.
* Collaborating effectively with project stakeholders and contributing to new business opportunities.
* Supporting continuous improvement across AMPT’s tools, methods, people, and culture, while contributing to the growth of AMPT’s intellectual property.
* Coaching and mentoring less experienced team members, and where required, line managing a small team or contractors.
* Leading a concurrent engineering approach by integrating inputs from suppliers, simulation, testing, and systems engineers to deliver designs that meet manufacturability (DFM), cost, weight, and performance targets.
* Applying DFMEA and other quality tools to support robust design development.
What you will need to be successful in this role:
* Proven ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and respectfully with all stakeholders. Strong presentation and documentation skills.
* Effective workload planning, task management, prioritisation, and follow-up.
* Strong understanding of concurrent engineering principles, DFM, Design to Cost, lightweighting, and attribute-driven design.
* Experience working with CAE engineers to optimise and validate designs; familiarity with CAE methodologies is highly advantageous.
* Sound understanding and application of DFMEA.
* Proficiency in 3D and 2D design using CATIA or Siemens NX (other platforms considered), including mechanical and/or surface modelling.
* Familiarity with GD&T and industry drawing standards.
* Experience with automotive design processes, body structures, battery packs, composites, and 3D printing is advantageous.
* Ability to generate and justify design concepts, explaining decision-making clearly in design reviews.
* Self-motivated with a positive influence on others; ability to work effectively under pressure and deliver to strict deadlines.
* Flexible and adaptable mindset, with strong team-working and interpersonal skills.
* Results-oriented with confident decision-making skills and strong organisational discipline.
* Willingness to travel as needed and a strong commitment to Health & Safety.
This is a full-time office-based role based at our campus in Silverstone, with additional requirement to travel to other locations where necessary.
