Ward 17 - Registered Nurse Band 5
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the small dynamic team of Ward 17. This is a fantastic opportunity for a registered nurse or newly qualified nurse to develop their skill base and work within a supportive team to learn the speciality cohort of Oncology and Haematology potentially leading to training in chemotherapy administration.
Ward 17 is an 18-bedded Haematology Ward with an element of General Medicine as part of the Medical Division within the James Paget Hospital, caring for patients with malignant and non-malignant blood disorders, cancers and general medicine.
The successful candidate will be a caring, compassionate, dedicated Registered Nurse with an NMC registration, who can work well within a team whilst also able to show individual initiative, clinical competency and strive to provide excellent progressive nursing care.
Main duties of the job
1. To assess basic and specialist care needs of patients and implement without direct supervision. The nurse should at all times act in such a manner as to justify public trust and confidence to safeguard the interest of individual patients.
2. Ensure that agreed standards of nursing practice within the ward/department area are maintained.
3. Ensure that all Trust, Divisional, and Ward/Department Health & Safety Policies are adhered to maintain personal contact with patients, other health care disciplines, relatives and visitors.
4. Mentorship support of new staff.
5. Mentorship/support of student nurses.
6. To undertake appropriate enhanced roles, following the necessary training, e.g. IV drug administration, ECG recording.
7. Ensure safe custody and administration of drugs, in accordance with Trust Policy.
8. To undertake further training to administer Systemic anti-cancer therapies and give out of hours advice via the acute oncology/haematology 24 hour phone line.

1. To keep abreast of current trends and developments within nursing, being constantly aware of the need for self-development.
2. To participate in Personal Development Planning.
3. To participate in Health Promotion and Rehabilitation Advice to patients and relatives.
4. Undertake specific projects requested by Ward/Department Manager.
5. Support/promote effective usage of all ward/department resources.
6. Flexibility of hours of work as to fit the needs of the service.
7. To keep in line with registration revalidation requirements.

To ensure that the Trust's Health and Safety Policies are understood and observed and that procedures are followed. To ensure the appropriate use of equipment and facilities and that the working environment is maintained in good order.
Moving and Handling Responsibilities
To ensure that all moving and handling tasks within their area of responsibility are assessed, that there is a manual handling plan indicating safe systems of work, and that documentation is regularly maintained and updated.
