An exciting opportunity has arisen for a successful candidate to undertake the position of Painter and Decorator within the wider City Hospitals Independent Commercial Enterprises Ltd. (CHoICE) team. CHoICE, an independent wholly owned subsidiary company which provides all Hard and Soft Facility Management services to South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust has operated since 2013 and demonstrates a strong desire to continuously expand and provide additional services to the local community.
Joining the Sunderland Royal based team, you will join a team of approximately 30+ building related colleagues, who deliver planned and reactive maintenance services including minor new works installation to Sunderland Royal Hospital, Sunderland Eye Infirmary, Sunderland Childrens Centre and Durham Treatment Centre. Utilising a wide range of craftpersons across all building related disciplines, we ensure that a customer focused approach is implemented and all the buildings we maintain are fit for purpose and compliant with current legislation and standards.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant must have a detailed understanding of construction processes in relation to painting and decorating and other related building works in accordance with relevant statutory and mandatory legislation and best practice guidance. They must also be able to provide evidence of the completion/obtainment of recognised relevant painting and decorating apprenticeship and ideally will have gained maintenance experience within a healthcare environment or similar.
Operating as a Painter and Decorating Crafts Person, you will receive your assigned work on a handheld device from a relevant supervisor and will be expected to organise your daily workload to ensure that tasks are suitably prioritised and completed within a timely manner.
Performing duties with minimum supervision, you will have a flexible and positive approach to change and can deal with new situations as they arise. Excellent communication skills are essential as you will be liaising directly with clinical and non-clinical staff and service users alike. The post holder also will be expected to lead by example and have a strong commitment to delivering a professional estate service. Successful applicants must have widespread knowledge of repair, redecoration and maintenance of painting and decorating related building works in accordance with relevant statutory legislation and appropriate codes of practice.
Job responsibilities
The main purpose of the role is for the post holder to undertake planned and reactive painting and decoration related duties at properties maintained by CHoICE. Appropriate instruction and direction will be provided by a relevant building related estates officer or supervisor and will be in conjunction with CFS customers painting programmes, minor new works or reactive defects as required.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Basic numeracy & literacy skills to level 1 or equivalent
* Basic IT Skills
* BTEC/ONC, City & Guilds or NVQ level 3 in Painting and Decorating or equivalent
* Completion of recognised and accredited apprenticeship in a relevant discipline
* HNC in a building related discipline
* Formal Health and Safety Qualification e.g. IOSHH Working Safely
Physical skills
* Is able to travel and work at all Trust sites
* Is able to undertake moderate physical activities for long periods throughout a typical working day
* Is able to complete tasks which require short intensive bursts of effort before returning to moderate physical activities
* Undertake regular moving and handling activities
* Requirement for highly developed physical dexterity, for hand and eye coordination and manipulation of fine tools
Skills and Knowledge
* To have the ability to adapt to the changing demands of the role including the reaction to emergency situations
* Able to prioritise his/her own workload ensuring that high quality patient care and SLA targets are achieved
* Regularly provide and receive routine information and on occasion sensitive information with a range of Estates work colleagues, other Trust colleagues and external Trust/CFS contacts
* Self-motivated with a desire to improve current practices
* Able to adopt a flexible approach to working hours
