Reporting to the duty shift team leader to ensure the safe operation and environmental performance of the plant and security of the site.
Ensuring the plant is operated with respect to safety, environmental and operational limits at all times, whilst maximising availability, reliability, efficiency and ensuring the plant is dispatching in consultation with PPA/DNO to fulfil system operator and PPA arrangements.
In consultation with the shift team leader and authorisations, ensure the release of plant/apparatus is made in line with agreed planning schedule and the site's safety rules.
Part of the shift team to actively deliver, using ‘on-shift’ resources, the planned and reactive first line maintenance, operational routines and testing requirements, to achieve availability and reliability targets required.
Ensure adherence with and the development of all site operations procedures and management instructions.
Undertake the role of the shift team leader from time to time, as per delegated authority and having achieved the required authorisations.
To work flexible working patterns in support of the business, able to change working patterns where necessary in order to meet the needs of the business.
Carry out other such responsibilities and duties commensurate with the position as required by the company.
Some occasional and ad-hoc national travel may be required.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
* Ensure the plant is operated with respect to safety, environmental and operational limits at all times, whilst maximising availability, reliability and efficiency. This will be applied during all steady state, start up, shutdown and emergency situations, working from either the Control Room and/or plant as required.
* Operate the plant to allow it to be dispatched in line with the PPA/DNO requirements.
* Ensure through correct operation and monitoring, compliance with all aspects of the Environmental Permit; reporting any potential and actual incidents to the Shift Team Leader.
* Undertake routine plant inspections, operational routines, adjustments and testing alongside the collecting and recording of plant data.
* Undertake general defect rectification, planned and first line reactive maintenance and fault finding, to achieve availability and reliability targets required.
* Monitor plant performance, identifying and taking proactive measures to improve performance shortfalls.
* Adopting and enacting role(s) within the site safety rules, including the isolation of mechanical plant and electrical apparatus and associated HV switching up to 33kV, as per site designated authorisations. Expectation is that all ASTL’s will become Senior Authorised Persons (Mech/LV & HV) to deputise as STL.
* Support the STL with the testing of the site emergency/abnormal condition plans and undertaking associated identified role(s), to manage all site emergencies safely and in line with local procedures.
* Provide operational support for the maintenance and fuel handling teams to maximise plant performance and safety, particularly during fuel delivery and by-product removal periods.
* Provide full ownership for the receipt of all plant operational chemicals onto site.
* Assist STL in maintaining an accurate and comprehensive shift log and ensuring all defects/works are recorded within the site's CMMS.
* Ensure all plant simulations are recorded and maintained in line with local arrangements.
* Adhere to health, safety and environmental management policies and assist in the creation/development of all site operations procedures, so they remain accurate, suitable and sufficient.
* Provide operational support for all planned outages as required, which may require periods of ‘Day working’.
* Adhere to all Company Policies & Procedures (including but not limited to) those specified in the Employment Handbook, H&S Policy, IMS System and any financial/accounting systems.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Education
* ONC / C&G / NVQ level 3 in a process/engineering subject, with a high level of practical thermal/process plant operational experience. (Qualifications below this may be acceptable if accompanied by suitable experience).
* A good understanding of all HSE aspects is a fundamental requirement, with IOSH Managing safely a preferred requirement.
Skills & Experience
* Knowledge and experience of operating biomass or thermal power plant process, permit and safety systems, electrical distribution, protection, switchgear and HV switching (33KV).
* Possess a trade background in either mechanical, electrical or C&I.
* General knowledge and experience of steam turbines, combustion systems, steam cycle chemistry, WTP, generators, flue gas emission abatement and overall plant performance monitoring.
* Experience of operating a ‘soft desk’ HMI DCS.
* Full understanding of P&IDs.
* Computer literate with Microsoft Office suite and ideally previous CMMS and Nisoft Eclipse experience.
* Five years Power Plant Operations experience within a shift role.
* Good verbal/written communication skills in English.
* Good interpersonal skills, self-motivated, flexible and committed attitude.
* Full UK Driving Licence.

We are looking for an individual who has the aptitude to develop into a shift team leader over a mid-term time frame. Full training and support will be given to the successful candidate to ensure that they are ready to step into a shift team leader role when the next position becomes available.
