Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse Ophthalmology Outpatients
Job overview
The Ophthalmology Outpatient Department has a vacancy for a full-time Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse with at least 2 years of current nursing care experience in an elective, trauma, or outpatient ophthalmology setting.
The post is available full time - 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. The shift pattern is currently over four long days (8-6pm three days per week and one shift of 8-5.30pm), but flexibility can be offered over four and a half days as an alternative.
The post holder will act as a positive role model, promote effective teamwork, and encourage continuous development in the department.
Alongside the Senior Sister, the post holder will be responsible for the assessment of patient care needs, and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care. You will work as a deputy for the Department Senior Sister in supporting the performance management of the nursing team as well as supporting the coordination and facilitating the educational and development needs of staff in their clinical practice appropriate to the clinic environment.
The post holder will also be expected to undertake expanded practice competencies to become a practitioner in our intravitreal injection service due to the increasing demand for treatment for people with eye conditions such as diabetic macular oedema, retinal vein occlusion, and age-related macular degeneration.

Main duties of the job
You will take overall responsibility for all patients in the department in the absence of the Senior Sister ensuring they are appropriately assessed, management plans are in place, and the care they receive is effective, compassionate, and of the best quality. You will regularly take charge of the department and be responsible for supervising others and evaluating the care patients receive.
The post holder will have the:
* Ability to assess patients, plan care for a group of patients, deliver care, and evaluate the effectiveness of care given.
* Ability to organise own workload whilst supervising others.
* Good analytical skills for assessing and interpreting acute and other complex patient conditions, recognize deterioration, and take appropriate action.

Person specification
* NMC Registrant
* The post holder will be a first level registered nurse with a Diploma or Degree in Nursing and/or evidence of relevant continuing professional development equivalent to post-graduate diploma level.
* Assessor award or mentorship qualification
* Minimum 2 years’ experience at Band 5 in secondary care and/or previous leadership experience at band 6 in excess of 2 years.
* Experience of being a facilitator of Clinical Governance and risk management
* Have regular experience of taking charge of a shift as a coordinator and managing staffing levels to meet the demands of a service
* Have experience of managing staff performance in regards to annual appraisals of staff and developments plans
* Ensure the appropriate management of staff performance, conduct, and sickness is in line with Trust Policy.
* Leadership Qualification or willingness to undertake
* Willingness to support the intravitreal injection service once expanded practice protocols have been achieved to become an autonomous practitioner
* Basic post-graduate ophthalmology nursing qualification
