Job overview
This advert is for a Consultant Stroke Physician delivering hyperacute and acute stroke care. The post is a full-time role comprising of 11.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) including 1.5 SPA and 1.5 PA for stroke on call. Candidates are expected to have received subspecialty training in stroke medicine with a parent specialty of geriatrics, GIM, neurology, or acute medicine. Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or be within six months of being so at the time of interview.
The consultant will be based at Frimley Park Hospital and join a senior team of 4 substantive consultants, a stroke nurse consultant, 2 associate specialists, and 2 locum consultants. We also have a team of 6 stroke nurse specialists that support the stroke admissions and thrombolysis pathway. The consultant will be expected to provide stroke care across all areas of the pathway including Hyperacute, Acute, Rehabilitation, TIA clinic, and Stroke follow-up clinics.
Main duties of the job
* To contribute to inpatient stroke service delivery by participation with colleagues in:
- Acute Care
- Rehabilitation
* To work with Stroke clinical nurse specialists to provide prehospital ambulance triage, prompt thrombolysis, and onward thrombectomy referral.
* To be confident in the interpretation of CT, CTA, and CTP imaging.
* Provide a stroke consultation service to medical colleagues in other specialties in the Trust.
* To participate in weekly TIA and Stroke follow-up clinics shared among stroke consultant colleagues.
* To participate actively in both Stroke Service and Trust clinical governance and audit.
* To participate in Stroke Mortality and Morbidity meetings.
* To attend regional stroke clinical governance meetings.
* To participate actively in Stroke research.
* Undertake continuing medical education.
* Supervise and train junior medical staff as appropriate.
* Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as appropriate.
* Participate in the management of the stroke service.
* It is expected that the post holder will participate fully in future service developments in line with national targets and locally commissioned improvements.
* On-call duties: 1:8 weekend on call with onsite ward round from 0800-1300 and remote thrombolysis calls.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
There will be the need from time to time to make changes to the job plan. It is expected that the successful candidate will be prepared to negotiate such changes for the benefit of clinical service delivery and the department. The stroke consultants work a rolling rota of HASU cover, Thrombolysis cover, and clinic cover. Occasional sessions on the rehabilitation ward are required to cover colleague annual leave.
The post-holder will be encouraged to work with a mentor to help with their development.
The appointee will have access to a medical secretary, dedicated office space, plus full IT facilities including EPIC EPR.

Qualifications and training
* Full GMC registration
Experience
* Experience in management of acute stroke, thrombolysis, TIA, stroke rehabilitation, and stroke follow-up.
Knowledge and Expertise
* Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in Geriatric Medicine and be an independent thrombolysis practitioner.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients.
* IT skills and computer literacy.
* Knowledge of and training in acute frailty services.
