Our Geoscience team
Venterra’s Geoscience team is made up of market-leading experts from Ordtek, GDG, and Partrac. We offer unparalleled site characterisation, geoscience management, sediment processes, UXO management, and GIS and data services, tailored to meet the comprehensive needs of our clients.
Role Description:
Venterra’s Geoscience UXO management team provide services encompassing phases 1-8 of our Risk Management and Mitigation strategy. Depending on the specific needs of our clients, we tailor a bespoke approach to ensure that our overarching risk mitigation strategy is met. This encompasses a wide range of services, from initial risk assessments and chart production to GIS mapping, detailed analysis of geophysical data, and the provision of on-site specialists to supervise risk mitigation measures and subsequent actions, culminating in the final ALARP certification.
As Venterra’s UXO Risk Manager and Strategy Lead you will be responsible for providing expert guidance, oversight, and management of all UXO-related activities across projects within our Geoscience team. This includes technical assessments, compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and ensuring all operations involving unexploded ordnance are conducted effectively and safely. The role demands a high level of expertise in UXO identification, handling, and mitigation, combined with strong leadership and problem-solving skills.
Key responsibilities:
Technical Oversight
* Serve as the organization’s subject matter expert on UXO operations, safety, and regulatory compliance.
* Provide technical authority on UXO risk assessments and inherently understand how this risk strategically affect client projects.
* Review and approve UXO-related project plans, including risk assessments, method statements, and safety protocols.
Regulatory Compliance
* Ensure all UXO activities align with local, national, and international regulations and standards.
* Liaise with regulatory bodies, clients, and stakeholders to confirm compliance and address concerns.
Risk Management
* Identify and assess UXO-related risks in project areas and develop mitigation strategies.
* Support project teams in implementing effective control measures to minimize UXO risks.
Operational Support
* Input to the design of UXO surveys, clearance operations, and disposal activities as needed.
* Provide training and guidance to field teams on UXO identification, procedures, and safety practices.
* Maintain detailed records of UXO operations and provide regular updates to stakeholders.
Leadership and Communication
* Act as a primary point of contact for UXO-related queries within the organization
* Deliver clear communication to teams, clients, and regulatory agencies regarding UXO risks, procedures, and progress.
* Support the development of junior team members and provide mentorship on UXO-related technical skills.
* Engage with the wider industry and provide commentary on social media, conferences and exhibitions.
Commercial
* Assist with technical guidance during the bidding phase.
* Attend client meetings online and in person within the UK and occasionally internationally, maintaining and nurturing relationships through frequent communication.
* Identify new opportunities, support business development, and pitch services to potential customers.
Key Skills/Experience/Competencies:
* UXO risk management industry experience, including survey and clearance techniques.
* ALARP sign off as UXO-free under the ALARP principle
* Supporting clients during tender negotiations with survey contractors undertaking UXO survey and investigation programmes.
* Risk assessments for operations and maintenance phase of the cable systems.
* Strong understanding of the offshore energy industry and its needs.
* Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Proven experience in managing and ensuring data quality.
* Experience in project management or leadership roles.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders including clients, team members, and regulatory authorities.
* Strong commitment to adhering to safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices (familiarity with HSE regulations and ISO 45001 would be advantageous).
Education / Qualifications:
* Degree in Geophysics, Geoscience, or another relevant field.
* Formal Explosive Ordnance Disposal qualification would be desirable but not essential.
