The Role:
As our Director of Risk and Compliance you’ll ensure that the company adheres to all regulatory requirements, best practices, and
internal policies required to deliver great customer outcomes in the 2nd Charge Mortgage Market. This leadership role focuses on
overseeing and developing the company's risk management framework and driving a robust compliance culture to mitigate financial,
operational, and reputational risks.
Working closely with the Board and Head of Compliance, Audit and Risk, you’ll provide strategic leadership and drive performance
on regulatory risk and compliance matters, management practices and standards.
The role demands strong knowledge of the UK regulatory Mortgage landscape and the ability to collaborate across departments to
manage risk effectively and maintain compliance.
Key Responsibilities
* Leadership & Strategy:
* Lead the Risk and Compliance Department, setting clear objectives. Ensuring the alignment of the departments activities with
the company’s strategic and operational objectives and regulatory obligations.
* Develop, implement, and maintain the company’s compliance and risk management strategy, ensuring it is aligned with industry
best practices and applicable UK financial regulations (FCA, MCOB, GDPR, etc.).
* Oversee the annual Risk and Compliance Monitoring Programme and ensure compliance with regulation through the design of
adequate oversight activity.
* Provide expert advice to senior management and the board on risk and compliance matters, ensuring an effective governance
structure is in place.
* Participate in various financial services related external working parties and focus groups.
* Regulatory Compliance:
* Oversee all risk and compliance-related activities to ensure full adherence to applicable UK financial services and
legislative laws & regulations.
* Oversee all anti money laundering (AML) and financial crime prevention efforts.
* Act as the principal point of contact for the firm with the FCA and ensure Regulatory Reporting is completed accurately and
within relevant deadlines.
* Work closely with the Head of Compliance, Audit and Risk to effectively manage resources, ensuring adequate oversight and
appropriate policies and procedures are operating in order to deliver fair outcomes to consumers and to protect the business.
* Maintain awareness of evolving regulatory changes through horizon scanning and CPD to ensure the company adapts quickly and
efficiently to remain compliant.
* Provide rule and principle interpretation and guidance on meeting relevant regulatory requirements e.g. consumer duty.
* Develop and deliver training programs for employees across departments to foster a culture of compliance and risk awareness.
* Risk Management:
* Identify, assess, and monitor the company's key risks, including credit, operational, financial, and reputational risks.
Ensuring effective maintenance of the companies Risk Register.
* Establish and maintain a robust risk management framework that enables the business to proactively manage and mitigate risks.
* Work with key stakeholders to ensure the proper implementation of risk mitigation strategies, including regular risk
assessments and stress testing.
* Internal Audits & Reporting:
* Oversee internal and external audits to evaluate the effectiveness of compliance and risk management processes.
* Lead the preparation of reports for senior leadership, Board and regulatory bodies, detailing compliance status, risk
exposure, and mitigation activities.
* Promote best practice in Conduct Risk and regulatory compliance through the effective chair and management of the Conduct
Risk Committee.
* Ensure timely reporting and resolution of any compliance breaches or risk events.
* Stakeholder Collaboration:
* Ensure effective relationships between Compliance, Audit and Risk and the Board and Senior Management Team to ensure
appropriate compliance governance structures are in place, aligning risk management practices with the companies operational
and strategic goals.
* Manage relationships with external regulators, auditors, and third-party service providers to ensure compliance standards are
maintained.
* Consumer Protection & Ethical Standards:
* Ensure that the company maintains a strong focus on consumer protection, ensuring fair lending practices and transparency
with customers.
* Adhere to individual FCA Conduct Rules and maintains Fit and Proper status.
Qualifications (minimum):
* At least 10 years of experience in risk management and compliance, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role within
financial services or specifically, the Mortgage Industry.
* Proven experience in directly liaising with the regulator.
* Degree in Finance, Business, Law, or a related field. Professional certifications in risk management or compliance are highly
desirable.
* Proven knowledge of all relevant regulatory frameworks relating to mortgage lending and the financial services sector.
* Extensive experience with regulatory reporting, audits, and internal controls.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think strategically and act decisively.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to influence, negotiate, and build relationships with both
internal and external stakeholders.
* Solution-oriented mindset, capable of balancing risk management, compliance, and Consumer Duty with the commercial needs of a
growing business
* Ability to manage teams effectively
* Full CeMAP qualification (Desirable)
