Senior Radiotherapy Physicist (Fixed Term 12 Months)
Band 7 Senior Clinical Scientist (Radiotherapy Physics)
This is a fixed-term post for 12 months to cover maternity leave.
The Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering Department at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Clinical Scientist to join its Radiotherapy Physics Section.
The successful applicant will contribute to the development of the Radiotherapy Physics service as well as being involved in all routine aspects of the department's work including treatment planning, imaging, radiation dosimetry and machine QA.
Applicants should hold, or be about to obtain, registration as a Clinical Scientist.
Main duties of the job
As a Senior Radiotherapy Physicist, the post holder will work as part of the team providing the radiotherapy physics service to the Berkshire Cancer Centre (BCC). They will take responsibility for specific areas in the delivery of the routine physics service, working under the appropriate Lead Physicist in each area within the Section.
The post holder will also contribute to commissioning, service development and academic research as appropriate. The post holder may be required to assist with other duties as and when necessary.
This post has a direct impact on patient treatments and occasionally brings the post holder into direct contact with patients during their treatment.
The post holder liaises with a wide range of professional staff groups, at all levels within the Trust and with external equipment manufacturers.
Job responsibilities
* Perform quality control and calibration measurements, using specialised instrumentation, on radiotherapy treatment machines and imaging equipment in accordance with local and national protocols and codes of practice.
* Participate in the commissioning of radiotherapy equipment, including designing procedures and overseeing the commissioning of specific aspects of equipment.
* Produce individual treatment plans appropriate to the course of treatment prescribed by medical staff, both in routine and complex situations.
* Carry out verification procedures on plans produced by others to confirm the accuracy and appropriateness of the proposed treatment.
* Support and undertake research and development projects within Radiotherapy Physics, and where appropriate, other Sections as agreed with the Head of Section/Department.
* Develop new techniques and protocols which improve the accuracy, efficiency and/or efficacy of radiotherapy treatment.
* Assist in the training of other medical physics staff in specific techniques and procedures.
* Uphold the scientific standards of the department and ensure that conduct is appropriate to maintain HCPC registration as a clinical scientist and maintain CPD.
* Ensure mandatory and statutory training is kept up to date.
* Keep abreast of the latest scientific and technical developments and their applications within radiotherapy physics and associated fields.
* Carry out all work in accordance with the Quality System protocols.
* Work hours necessary for the proper and efficient performance of the work, occasionally performing duties outside the normal working hours of the Department.
* Co-operate in a professional manner with other scientific, medical and professional staff.
* Perform other appropriate duties consistent with the post holder's grade and capabilities as required by the Head of Section or Head of Medical Physics.
Person Specification
Education / Qualifications
* 1st or 2nd class Honours degree in a relevant subject
* Relevant MSc or higher degree
* Evidence of working towards HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist, or equivalent
* Current UK registration as a Clinical Scientist
Specialist Knowledge
* Theoretical and practical knowledge across the full range of working procedures and practices within Radiotherapy Physics
* Theoretical and practical knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines, particularly relating to ionising radiation
* Evidence of continuing professional development
* Evidence of research and development activity through publication and/or presentation
Experience
* Appropriate experience in Radiotherapy Physics including: Analysing and judging treatment options, identifying problems with patient-related equipment, exercising judgement to solve problems and making decisions on how equipment is to be used safely and correctly, all usually under time-pressure
* Demonstrated specialist training and practical experience in the use and calibration of radiotherapy equipment (including linear accelerators, brachytherapy units and their associated treatment planning systems), specialist test and measurement equipment and dosimetry equipment calibration
* Thorough understanding of patient and staff risks arising from the use of ionising radiation, radiotherapy equipment and procedures

Salary: £46,148 to £52,809 a year (plus 5% HCAS for Bracknell) per annum
