Dimensions of the Job
The post holder will:
1. Work autonomously, to participate in the maintenance, evaluation, staff training and documentation of all point of care testing equipment under the guidance of an HCPC registered BMS.
2. Ensure that equipment is maintained and controlled so as to be available in order to provide a rapid and timely turnaround time for patient care for community devices.
3. Make decisions as to the viability of equipment to be fit for purpose based upon procedures and personal findings.
4. Participate in the provision of External Quality Assessment schemes.
5. Upkeep data-based information such as registers, standard operating procedures, analyser maintenance programmes.
6. A degree of flexible working across community sites primarily during the core day.
Main Duties
Key Responsibilities
1. To maintain Point of Care equipment as directed ensuring all protocols and quality standards are met.
2. To work in accordance with departmental policies and standard operating procedures to maintain high standards of patient safety.
3. Following protocols and based upon personal investigation to remove from use any equipment / analyte not deemed to meet the required quality standards.
4. Be able to travel independently to any site where there is a LabKit presence and be able to maintain and assist the POCT service.
5. To ensure good stock control of consumables for all LabKit sites and ensuring a centralised stock is present at other BSPS Point of Care site.
6. To order agreed consumables from manufacturers to agreed financial values.
7. To directly liaise with the manufacturers of equipment where problems occur that require manufacturer's intervention.
8. To maintain good communication within the Point of Care team in order to maximise efficiency through agreed priorities and to achieve the aims of Point of Care analysis on a daily basis.
Personnel
1. To train clinical users of varying staff grades on all Point of Care equipment within the LabKit and Point of Care service.
2. To use agreed processes and competency measures when assessing staff in training.
3. To maintain up to date records of training and standard operating procedures (SOP).
4. To contribute to the continued review of training processes and training material.

Purpose of the Job
To support the delivery and operation of POCT services across the BSPS organisation with specific requirements to the LabKit/community team. This job description is an indication of the type and range of tasks that are expected of the post holder, and other duties may be required, in line with the role and the banding. It will be reviewed and amended from time to time in consultation with the post holder to take account of changing organisational need.

* For those without a suitable level 3 qualification, the successful candidate would be expected (and supported by BSPS) to follow a course of study/training to gain an equivalent level qualification e.g. NVQ/QCF level 3/IBMS Certificate of Achievement.

* Relevant Science Degree.

* Previous POCT and/or laboratory experience.
* Involvement in carrying out laboratory testing including co-ordination, evaluation and service development.
* Proven understanding of clinical governance with risk management, its importance and its application.

* Able to concentrate on production of accurate data & interpretation of results for prolonged periods (>2 hours) when interrupted on a frequent basis.
* Frequent concentration required for analysing data and performance but will be frequently interrupted with requests and queries requiring immediate response.
* Able to cope with occasional exposure to chemical spillages.
* Able to deal with frequent exposure to blood and urine.
* Able to cope with using VDU equipment more or less continuously on most days.
* Able to travel to any hospital sites as required by the service.

* Ability to communicate complex, contentious and sensitive messages. Proven ability to build and maintain professional relationships with the multi-disciplinary team members. Experience of introducing service improvements. Experience of stock control. Able to undertake basic routine maintenance on expensive instruments. Computer skills including use of databases, spreadsheets, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other clinical support systems. Experience of planning workload of other team members to ensure service delivery. Experience of supervising junior staff and students and to provide training as requested. Calibration of highly specialist, highly complex equipment used in provision of the service. Able to store/utilise various types of stock weighing up to 25kg per container on a daily basis (< 20 mins). Able to regularly provide information of a sensitive and emotional nature to staff and service users where there may be barriers to understanding.
