DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1.1 Professional a) Be responsible for ensuring that all departmental work is carried out to the relevant professional and quality standards. b) Interpret professional guidelines for adaptation to Trust Protocols and Clinicians preference of practice. c) Be responsible for ensuring that all equipment is maintained and safe to use. d) Act as a role model for all staff regarding professional conduct in all aspects of patient care. e) Be responsible for own technical competency and development through CPD activities. f) Ensure that State Registration is kept up to date. 1.2 Managerial a) Line manages all staff, providing support and advice, promote a team ethos. b) Line manages the clinical physiology team leaders and through them be responsible for managing the clinical physiologists and associated support staff. c) Be responsible for the compliance and implementation of Trust Policies regarding day-to-day running of the service as well as staff recruitment and selection, sickness, and absence monitoring procedures. d) Responsibility for the departmental budget management. e) Work closely with the Head of Clinical Service and Consultants to ensure that local and national access targets are achieved. f) Undertake the writing of business cases to enable the development of staffing structures, equipment purchases and the financial implications which may occur as a result. g) Keep informed and be able to discuss with the Operational Management teams and Consultant team any departmental changes or problems that may impact on service delivery, working with both parties to accomplish a solution. h) Represent the department at Regional Chief Cardiac Physiologist meetings, Trust Head of department meetings, and Trust Cardiology and Respiratory Group meetings to co-ordinate with other health care professionals regarding any local or national changes to patient care and services which may need integrating into our practice. i) As head of department, when required speak to hostile members of the public, to listen to their concerns, explain how we may be able to help the situation, alleviate anxiety and persuade the patient that their best interests are our primary aim. j) Responsible for evaluating new equipment, taking part in the procurement process. 1.3 Effort a) Able to perform appropriate investigations without medical supervision and therefore responsible for the safety and well being of the patient. b) There is frequent requirement for prolonged, but often predictable, periods of concentration, good hand/eye co-ordination and manual dexterity. c) Some procedures can cause patient anxiety and good verbal communication skills involving understanding, tact and persuasion are required. d) To have the required level of IT skills to ensure all test results are recorded electronically on the appropriate database. e) The role involves the lifting of medical equipment and the necessity to physically support the patient if they should collapse whilst undergoing a Treadmill Exercise Test. f) The role occasionally exposes the technician to emotionally stressful situations during cardiac arrests. Technicians are qualified to perform manual defibrillation and assist in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation techniques. 1.4 Technical a) Undertake lead role in provision of specialist clinical physiological tests and procedures relevant to specialty knowledge and competence. b) Responsible for acquiring, analysing, and editing the test data, interpreting the findings, and producing a report. c) Ensure all test results are recorded electronically on the appropriate database and report any discrepancies to the relevant members of the IT team for escalation. d) To keep up to date knowledge of new technology and concepts in order to offer guidance and advice to colleagues. e) To carry out diagnostic and therapeutic technical work as appropriate to quality standard. 1.5 Supervision and Training a) Plan, implement and monitor education and training of professional and support staff within the service, this is to include mandatory, professional, and personal development needs. b) Ensure that all individuals are trained and skilled to an appropriate level to enable them to fulfil the role of their post. c) To be responsible for the training of junior technicians and junior Speciality medical staff in the process of acquisition and interpretation of specialist clinical physiological tests. This includes overall responsibility for the standard of echocardiography training delivered to cardiology specialty registrars. d) Teach, assess, and contribute to the performance assessment of student and junior technicians. e) To deliver patient information and education at regular rehabilitation classes. f) Undertake regular performance development reviews on all staff. g) Responsible for ensuring clinical supervision/mentorship is provided for staff within the department. h) Responsible for ensuring the provision, development, and maintenance of training programmes within the service. i) Works in partnership with Higher Education Institutes, PCTs and Regional groups to establish development and training opportunities. j) Initiates and participates in audit, research and developments ensuring and enhancing links between practice, professional bodies, and research institutes. k) Responsible for delivering quality a robust quality assurance programme to make sure that standard of care is in line with national and international recommendations.
