We’re currently seeking an Engineer and Laboratory Supervisor to join us. You’ll join a dynamic team of engineers, salespeople, marketers, administrators, designers, assemblers, chemists, web developers, accountants, analysts, programmers, and many more. Globally we are united by our shared values that drive our culture. We want to be an employer where you can make a difference.
At Watson Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions, you face different challenges every single day. You are empowered to dream bigger and work smarter. You have time to live your life outside of your job.
We offer a full induction with training and ongoing support for all our systems and products. Along with this, you’ll gain access to the SSE academy where you can upskill and develop at your own pace.
Watson Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions is an SSE PLC Group company (https://www.spiraxsarcoengineering.com/). SSE (London Stock Exchange - FTSE 50) is a manufacturer of engineered solutions, employing 8500 people across 130+ operating units globally. We offer a range of fluid handling solutions across the biotech and industrial markets.
This role will focus on:
The role is key for the technical department to support customer focus through resolving queries, sales enquiry support, and the resolution of both internal and external non-conformances in production. Issues internally with hose products often exhibit at the assembly or testing stages, and the technical department is tasked with working closely with relevant departments to deliver a resolution that progresses the order to the customer. Issues externally with hose products require investigation to understand root cause and present a pathway to resolution along with appropriate reporting back to the customer. Occasionally customers wish to discuss issues directly with the technical department, and providing confidence in Aflex and our products is an important aspect of customer focus.
The resolution of non-conformances requires the application of engineering knowledge and collaboration with other departments as appropriate to deliver a positive outcome.
What you’ll be doing:
* You will engage with appropriate production departments to resolve issues related to products and equipment. The majority of issues are likely to manifest in the assembly and testing departments, but other areas of the business may require engineering support.
* You will be part of the wider team that responds to sales requests for chemical compatibility checks, hose application knowledge, and other technical issues. The shared technical inbox will be a key route of communication. Engagement with customers and distributors directly is expected.
* You will be expected to undertake appropriate research and development to deliver solutions. This may encompass methods for manufacture, consideration of materials, enhancements to tooling, and review and improvements to fitting designs.
* Testing of hose products to identify failures and develop solutions. Testing includes hydrostatic (high-pressure water), pressurized gas, tensile, dimensional checks, material checks, electrical properties, digital microscope, and XRF material analysis – the list is not exhaustive.
* Project management – some solutions will become projects that need to reach a conclusion. This may require interaction with other departments or other functions within the technical department (e.g., fitting design). You will be expected to manage some projects where directed.
* You will be supervising the laboratory asset as part of this role.
* Enforcing 6S of lab users, but with managerial support from the technical manager as required.
* Keeping testing methods, risk assessments, and relevant documentation up to date.
* Lab overall function and organization.
* Driving continuous improvement.
Who you’ll be working with:
You will work closely with the assembly and testing departments on a daily basis to resolve issues that arise. These departments build, test, and inspect hose assemblies for dispatch to customers.
You will be working with the quality department as they will normally have issues raised to them in the first instance. In addition, they will manage the interface to external customers for hose returns.
You will be working with any other department within Aflex as appropriate.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
* An engineering background related to mechanical or manufacturing engineering disciplines. Manufacturing skills relating to machining and manufacturing processes would be an advantage.
* Qualifications: a minimum of level 3 qualifications (e.g., L3 BTEC, A-levels) involving maths and engineering is desirable. Significant relevant experience will be considered as an equivalent.
* Experience in problem solving and determining root cause. (Desirable – training can be provided)
* The ability to manage several aspects and competing priorities.
* The ability to write reports to a standard suitable for internal circulation and external customers.
Closing date: 2/3/2025
As a growing and ambitious organization with a presence in over 60 global locations and across multiple markets, we can offer you the working environment and support needed to be successful. We are committed to achieving workforce diversity and creating an inclusive working environment. We welcome all applications irrespective of social and cultural background, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, or religious belief.
