The following are the core responsibilities of the healthcare assistant. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
a. Undertake new patient health checks
b. Phlebotomy
c. Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes
d. Assist in minor operations clinics
e. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitery, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately
f. Facilitate routine, lying and standing and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
g. Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
h. Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics
i. Carry out BMI checks as directed
j. Act as a chaperone as required
k. When trained, undertake venepuncture
l. When trained undertake and manage INR for patients, and calibration of the INR Star equipment
m. When trained, to administer vaccinations
n. When trained, carry out ear irrigation under the supervison of the practice nurse
o. Carry out ECGs as requested
p. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
q. Provide support during minor operations as required
r. Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session
s. Ensure fridges temperatures and TAGS are recorded and they are cleaned routinely in accordance with practice policy
t. Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy
u. Regularly check emergency bag, oxygen cylinders and anaphylaxis box equipment
v. Check and order stock as required ensuring levels as per practice policy
w. Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate
In addition to the primary responsibilities, the healthcare assistant may be requested to:
a. Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead
b. Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
c. Support and participate in shared learning within the practice
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: £11.74 per hour
