Bank Maxillofacial and Orthodontic Specialist Nurse Band 5
The Maxillofacial and Orthodontic department is looking to build a team of dynamic, conscientious, flexible individuals (Nurses) to work shifts across 3 of the sites within the Royal Free London NHS Foundation sites.
Staff will be required to work on one of our 3 sites at either Barnet, Chase Farm or Edgware Hospitals.
The candidates must hold the National Dental Nurse Certificate Qualification and be fully registered with the General Dental Council. Ideally, you will be hospital trained in both maxillofacial and orthodontics; training will be provided as required.

Main Duties of the Job
* The post holder will provide caring, professional, and specialised assistance and support for the maxillofacial, orthodontic, restorative, and prosthetics clinicians and post-graduate students.
* Provide pre/post-operative specialised advice to patients including hygiene instructions.
* Assist in the smooth running of the department and provide professional care and specialised knowledge for a wide range of patients including children, adults, special needs, trauma, and oncology patients.
* Assist Consultants, Registrars, and Clinicians with a variety of specialised procedures, including emergency treatments, trauma, skin biopsies, oral surgery, restorative, and reconstructive treatments. This will involve preparation of specialised/expensive equipment and materials.
* Act and work independently managing clinics effectively and efficiently, and as a valued member of a multidisciplinary team within the trust guidelines.

1. Clinical Responsibilities:
* Carry out procedures in a caring and sensitive manner and apply aseptic techniques e.g., dressings for trauma/cancer patients/local anaesthetic surgical procedures.
* Access walk-in/telephone patients offering advice and sending them through the appropriate channels e.g., Accident and Emergency, or back to GP/GDP.
* Work within the trust policy when treating patients with infectious/highly transmittable diseases.

Provide professional care and specialised knowledge for a wide range of patients e.g., children, adults, special needs, trauma, and oncology, including educating patients/relations with specialised oral hygiene and dietary advice.
2. Carry out finger blood tests for Warfarin patients, understanding and acting on results.

Take responsibility for personal continuing professional development in order to enhance knowledge, skills, and values needed for safe and effective practice.
Set goals using a performance work plan.
4. Responsibility for Financial and Physical Resources:
No direct budgetary responsibilities.
An awareness and understanding of resource consciousness, minimising financial wastages when rotating stock and stocking surgeries.
5. Responsibility for Leading and Managing:
* May be required to supervise qualified and unqualified staff, and carry out KSF appraisals on staff on a lower banding. However, they will have no direct line management responsibility.

Education & Professional Qualifications
* National Certificate for Dental Nursing / NVQ or hospital equivalent / Diploma level.
* GCSE or equivalent in English and 1 other subject.
* Registered with the GDC by January 08.
* Track record of continuous professional development, i.e., courses and in-service training. Courses can include implantology, IV sedation, radiography, etc.
Experience
* Significant Post Graduate experience as a dental nurse/surgery assistant with demonstrable experience in Oral & Maxillofacial, Orthodontics, and Restorative Department.
* While some experience in each of the above subjects is a minimum request, the candidate will be expected to become proficient in a full range of maxillofacial, orthodontic, and restorative skills during their development through the KSF framework.
* After demonstrable time in this post with in-house training and the knowledge gained during surgical and non-surgical procedures, the candidate will be expected to be fully competent and a skilful maxillofacial, orthodontic, and restorative nurse working on their own initiative and managing individual clinics.
* Basic anatomy of head & neck obtained from national certificate and working in maxillofacial.
* Hospital experience familiarity with restorative & Oral Maxillofacial procedures.
* Working in a busy environment.
* Basic IT skills.
* Previous knowledge of development studies which can include either a certificate in implantology, IV sedation, or radiography.
