As a Research Assistant in Prof Lachlan Coin's group at the Doherty Institute, you'll contribute to cutting-edge research on bacterial drug resistance using genomic and transcriptomic approaches. You'll gain invaluable experience in long-read RNA sequencing and pathogen detection, while working collaboratively in a values-driven environment that fosters innovation and excellence in biomedical research.
Your responsibilities will include :
* Conduct Innovative Research : Contribute to projects on long-read sequencing and antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogens, planning and executing experiments to meet project timelines.
* Collaborate and Communicate : Work closely with supervisors and team members, assist in manuscript preparation, and participate actively in lab meetings and seminars.
* Maintain Research Standards : Keep accurate experimental records, adhere to good laboratory practices, and contribute to routine safety reviews.
* Support Team Development : Supervise junior staff, assist colleagues with experiments, and contribute to the department's research output.
You may be a great fit if :
You are a dedicated researcher with a strong background in microbiology or molecular biology, possessing excellent organisational skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic research environment.
You may also :
* Hold a BSc (Honours) or Master's degree in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Microbiology, or a related field.
* Have experience with aseptic technique, microbial culture, DNA / RNA extraction, and PCR.
* Possess strong analytical skills and attention to detail in recording and analysing research data.
* Have experience working with nanopore sequence data (desirable).
* Have experience analysing genomic / transcriptomic sequence data (desirable).

As part of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences since 2015, the School comprises three Departments, Departments of Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology, and Microbiology and Immunology. It has 85 research groups across the three departments, awarding-winning teachers and more than 2500 equivalent full-time student enrolments each year.
