Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Currently AWE is embarking on the largest construction project in Europe. Due to this increase in workload, we are recruiting for several different roles across the Mechanical Specialist group. We are upgrading and replacing a wide range of facilities with unique requirements and challenges. If you want to be part of a team, delivering one-of-a-kind projects, we have a wide range of opportunities. Do you have knowledge or experience in any of the following areas? If so, we would like to hear from you. Pressure Vessels & Pressure Systems Substantiation & Design to PD5500, ASME Dynamic blast analysis Management of complex mechanical projects Mechanical handling & substantiation Manufacturing techniques & materials traceability. Construction/ Commissioning support experience. Process & Pressure Systems Design to PD5500, PED, PSSR Complex gas system design, interlocks, working to nuclear safety cases, pressure regulations Mechanical Handling, Assembly equipment design. Pressure Vessels & Pressure Systems Testing & Trials. Interfaces & physical works management in accordance with design. Designing for Maintenance. Mechanical Handling - technical project management & managing small technical contracts. Below is a brief summary of the opportunities: You will be part of the TEUTATES Programme, which fulfils the UK obligations laid out in the TEUTATES Treaty, signed in 2010, between the UK and France. This treaty outlines the commitments by each nation to co-operate more closely on Hydrodynamic Trials (Nuclear Deterrent Research and Development). The TEUTATES project will deliver a one-of-a-kind international capability for underwriting nuclear explosive simulations in France and the UK. The Programme consists of 5 projects that deliver a combination of leading-edge X-Ray technology, explosive vessels, nuclear assembly operations and complex command & control systems. You will work as part of the engineering team to deliver the full capability of this facility and see it meet it’s requirements of underpinning the UK’s Continuous At Sea Deterrent (CASD). Hall d’Assemblage et Integration (Assembly Hall), HAI: This refers to the equipment that will be used to assemble type ‘A’ and ‘B’ UK Hydrodynamic Test Experiments, and to place the assembled experiments into a containment vessel, ready for transfer to the experiment firing point located elsewhere within the EPURE facility. Diagnostics & Exploders, D&E: To facilitate a trial in the new facility, a number of Diagnostic and Exploder system work package elements are required are, Radiographic Diagnostic Equipment (RDE): to capture radiographic images, Non-Radiographic Diagnostic Equipment (NRDE): to record parameters of the experiment, including vessel condition, timing signals etc., Vessel Gas Management System (VGMS): to leak test and condition the vessels prior to the experiment and also to monitor and vent the vessels post-experiment. Vessels: The UK operated containment vessel for Type A experiments, comprising conventional and accountable nuclear materials (ANM). The purpose of the vessels is to contain the blast and detonation products within its defined volume, whilst enabling radiographic, electrical and optical diagnostic and operational signals to pass through the containment boundary. The vessels must be designed to be operable within the constraints of the existing EPURE facility. The expectation is that vessel will also be substantiable for Type B (Scaled) experiments which will additionally contain special nuclear materials (SNM) and a bounding approach will be taken in this respect. Induction Voltage Adder, IVA: The IVA is the UK radiographic sources for the EPURE Facility. The IVA machine was primarily designed and supplied by L3. There was significant work to review and where necessary modify or certify the design to bring it to an acceptable standard for AWE and EPURE facilities The IVA covers the design, manufacture, assembly of all IVA required modifications to make it compliant with European standards, supporting equipment to make it usable in the EPURE facility and maintenance equipment for the whole life cycle. Broadly the IVA Work Packages fall within one of three areas: IVA Machine design, Command & Control or Associated Equipment Interim Firing Point 2, IFP2: The Interim Firing Point 2 (IFP2) project is to provide an interim capability to extend the existing operational facility for type C&D trials. This shall be done by replacing the 2 existing X-ray Machines with new technologies, designing and supplying new diode technology, and supporting substantial refurbishments to provide environmental protection for the machines. To be considered for these roles you must have: A Degree, HND/HNC, in an engineering discipline supported by considerable practical experience, with or working towards professional registration Experience of managing both external suppliers and in-house teams to deliver Project design packages Drive and autonomy to interact with a wide array of stakeholders across disciplines, functions, companies and countries. Experience of all aspects of the project life-cycle: Establishment of requirements and problem definition. Developing and designing solutions to meet requirements Configuration management and application of change control processes to maintain design intent throughout the Project life cycle Implementation and commissioning Verification and validation that the design meets requirements Knowledge of engineered plant and systems in at least one of the following areas: Production/Process plant and equipment Building Services Utilities distribution and engineering Experience of HAZOP process. Experience of working in a regulated environment. Experience of delivering projects using a structured methodology or gated process. Delivery of cross-discipline Design packages in a multi-discipline environment, both technical and delivery performance. Capable of undertaking role of Principal Designer under CDM Regulations Design information configuration control for the life of a project General Responsibilities (this may vary depending on role): Be the engineering design intelligent customer within AWE Review that the design drivers (Requirements) are suitable & appropriate and advise. Assess the suitability of engineering design resources (both internal and external to AWE) to execute facility design. Ensure the checking and recording the competence of designers. Lead, drive, communicate and be accountable for the delivery of allocated packages regarding quality, cost effective and lifetime value for money facility/PPE designs. Compile the instruction defining the expectations regarding the design scope and deliverables. Provide tasking of allocated Project Engineering resources (including supporting the Line Manager with AWE facility design resource development). Deliver, to the PEM, design solutions that meet business needs (functional performance), through life performance, are licensable and are deliverable. Manage the Design Intent and Design Information Configuration from inception through to project handover and into the operational phase. Assist the Head of Design Engineering in developing the Facility Design capability within AWE, encompassing both Improvements and Resource skills development. What will you get from us?
