Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is a large 768 bed acute Trust serving South West London and Surrey. The trust is rated as Good by the CQC and we welcome applications from individuals committed to being part of the team to maintain and build on this.
Our theatre teams have a proven track record of providing high-quality care to our patients and are looking for a Registered Scrub Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner who is committed to providing consistent gold standard. Epsom Hospital has 5 main theatres and 2 day surgery theatres.
This post is suitable for an experienced registered theatre scrub nurse or ODP looking to progress and enhance their skills. Our ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, pro-active team player who demonstrates excellent communication and leadership skills.
A flexible approach is essential as an on-call commitment and internal rotation is required for this post.
Main duties of the job
To have responsibility for the following aspects of care and management:
1. Develop and update protocols and related practice in line with current research
2. Care delivered to patients and monitoring of standards of care
3. Selection, deployment, training and development of staff and students
4. Assess and develop and implement specialised nursing packages of care and work in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to maintain standard
5. Create and support an environment of lifelong learning and continuous improvement
6. Refer and order specialised tests in line with agreed protocols and clinical governance guidelines.
7. Assist in the development of evidence-based practice in the renal service.
8. Provide highly specialised nursing advice to ensure appropriate treatment and care is always delivered to the patient.
9. Be accountable for the provision, organisation, and direction of the nursing care for the patient in his/her care.

Knowledge and skills
* Theatre Experience which clearly demonstrates clinical expertise/skills
* Knowledge of recruitment, selection and HR procedures.
* Leadership / management Skills and evidence of leading a team
* Understanding of risk and clinical governance issues relating to theatres
* Shares knowledge and skills through teaching and mentoring junior staff
* Audit and Research experience
Qualification
* Registered Nurse /Operating Department Practitioner
* Evidence of recent/ ongoing professional development
* Competence in additional technical skills (e.g. venepuncture, cannulation)
* Management or Leadership Qualification
Communication
* Enjoys and works well as part of a team
* Challenges poor practice and escalates clinical concerns in an appropriate and timely fashion
Planning & Organising
* Ability to adapt and respond quickly to changes in the clinical environment
* Ability to co-ordinate planned and unplanned activities
Leadership
* Able to utilise skills and knowledge to improve practice within the clinical environment
* Evidence of Leadership experience
Experience
* Demonstrate involvement in change management
* Previous considerable clinical experience within perioperative setting and sphere of practice
* Demonstrable knowledge and experience of utilising an evidence-based practice approach to care.
