Shropshire Cat Rescue was started in 1991 and became a registered charity in 1998. We work from a shelter which comprises rehoming pens, a nursery and a retirement village for older cats. We work alongside the public to encourage the human-animal bond and facilitate educational and confidence building opportunities for a broad spectrum of learners.
In addition to the cats, we have rescued guinea pigs, have had rabbits in the past and have a small holding comprising pigs, goats, Shetland ponies, hens and of course Hector the shelter manager’s dog.
We are looking to create a small team to work an initial six month contract, 16 or 17 hours per week with a repeated rota pattern every three weeks. The rota will include morning shifts of 4 hours and evening shifts of 2 hours whilst working one or two shifts for two out of three weekends.
Wage: monthly at a rate of £11.50 per hour
Responsibilities include (but are not exhaustive):
* Administering medication and recording same
* Completing observation records and recognising patterns in health and reporting to shelter manager
* Weighing, worm and flea treatments and recording same
* Transferring written data onto our Anilog database and ensuring our database is up-to-date with all cat related information
* Behavioural assessments
* Habituation of young kittens
* Grooming
* Microchipping of newly admitted cats
* Rehabilitation exercises and observation including basic physiotherapy
* Bathing of cats/kittens if required
* Blood pressure taking and monitoring
* Liaising with the Shelter Manager, Administrative staff and Team Leaders to ensure good communication and to ensure all cleaning, animal care, health and wellbeing is addressed, recorded and acted upon.
You will be working at our Bayston Hill Shelter near Shrewsbury and will need a car and clean driving licence. Experience working within a veterinary practice for a minimum of twelve months is essential for the purposes of medication, medicating, behavioural, physical and mental observation, grooming and weight management. Physio based exercise, habituation, microchipping and blood pressure-taking would be a bonus but is not essential as on-site training will be given.

* Computer literacy
* Good communication skills
* Ability to work independently
* Ability to work alongside volunteers
* Good instincts and problem solving ability
* Excellent cat and kitten handling skills
* An understanding and recognition of the “Fear Free” concept and a willingness to engage and use resources to promote this
* The ability to remain calm under pressure
* The ability to multi-task
You will be working alongside volunteers and you will be reporting to the Shelter Manager. Volunteers will be responsible for feeding and cleaning.
